  • Where: The Toyota power brake assist recall affects certain vehicle owners nationwide.

Toyota issued a recall for more than 40,000 of its model year 2023-2024 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid vehicles over concerns they could experience a loss of power brake assist.

The Toyota power brake assist recall involves certain Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid vehicles produced between June 1, 2022, and Sept. 10, 2024.

Toyota said drivers of the recalled Corolla Cross Hybrid vehicles may temporarily experience a hard brake pedal with reduced braking force, causing the vehicles’ stopping distance to be longer than expected, increasing the chance of an accident.

“A loss of power brake assist can extend the distance required to stop, increasing the risk of a crash,” the Toyota recall says

Toyota says brake fluid pressure may not be controlled as designed

Toyota attributes the issue to the recalled Corolla Cross Hybrid vehicles’ brake fluid pressure potentially not being controlled as designed, during limited situations when the brake pedal is applied during cornering.

Vehicle owners affected by the recall will be notified by Toyota to bring their vehicles to a Toyota dealer to have their skid control electronic control unit software — which controls the hydraulic and regenerative brake systems — updated, at no cost, according to the Toyota recall.

The automaker said it will be notifying affected vehicle owners by Nov. 19, 2024, and potentially as soon as Nov. 5.

Vehicle owners with more questions about the Toyota power brake assist recall can contact the automaker by phone at 1-800-331-4331 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.

Toyota issued a separate recall in late August for more than 43,000 Toyota Sequoia Hybrid vehicles over concerns the vehicles’ tow hitch cover could separate while the vehicle is being driven, posing a safety risk.
