Lexus recall overview:ย

  • Who: Toyota has recalled more than 11,000 Lexus vehicles.ย
  • Why: The vehiclesโ€™ head restraints can be removed without pressing a lock release button, creating a potential for injury.ย
  • Where: The Lexus recall is active in the United States.

Toyota is recalling more than 11,000 Lexus vehicles because their head restraints can be removed without pressing a lock release button, creating a potential for injury.

The automaker reported the recall to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on June 27. It applies to 11,418 vehicles, including the 2024-2024 Lexus RX 350, 2024-2025 Lexus NX 250, 2024-2025 Lexus NX 350 and 2024-2025 Lexus NX 350h.

At issue in the recall are head restraint systems on the vehiclesโ€™ driver and passenger front seats. As in many cars, the head restraints can be adjusted upward by lifting. The restraints are also designed to be removed when lifted upward while a lock release button is simultaneously pressed.

However, due to an error in the machining process of the head restraint brace, one notch may be larger than it should be, allowing for the head restraint to be completely removed without pressing the lock release button.ย

This means the recalled vehicles may not meet safety requirements, according to the Lexus recall.ย

โ€œIf the head restraint is able to be removed without pressing the lock release button, it could be inadvertently removed and not replaced, increasing the risk of injury to an occupant in the driver or passenger front seat in the event of a rear-end crash,โ€ the recall says.ย

While more than 11,000 vehicles are included in the recall, Toyota estimates that only about 26% of those vehicles actually have the issue.

Free repair offered, Lexus recall says

Toyota will mail recall notices to owners of the affected vehicles by Aug. 26, instructing them to return their cars to a Lexus dealer.ย ย

The dealers will replace the driver and front passenger seat headrest free of charge.ย

Last month, Toyota issued a separate recall for approximately 102,000 of its model year 2022-2023 Toyota Tundra and Lexus LX vehicles over concerns they could suffer a loss of motive power.ย

Same issue on 2024 Venza LE rear headrests. Toyota service centers say that the improper notching is consistent on other Venzas/RAV4s on the lot and thus is not a problem. This is a safety issue and needs to be corrected. Hoping more consumers report to the NHSTA about their Venzas!
