A woman is shopping in a drugstore.Buzz increases over a recall of U by Kotex Sleek Tampons Regular Absorbency that are said to fall apart upon removal. Late last year, Kimberly-Clark, the makers of Kotex tampons and pads, announced a major real of some Kotex products due to possible defects in some of their tampons.

The line of affected tampons was U by Kotex Sleek Tampons, a line with clean, black packaging marketed towards younger women. The line comes in multiple absorbency like many tampons, including regular and super.

The recall addresses reports that some the regular absorbency tampons were unraveling in people’s bodies as the user attempted to remove them. In fact, some people report they had not realized that their tampon had unraveled, so they ended up with pieces of tampons in their vagina for many days. This can lead to a range of health problems, including yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis, and even the rare Toxic Shock Syndrome.

So, Kotex made the decision to recall the U by Kotex Sleek Tampons Regular Absorbency made between October 2016 and October 2018 to prevent more people from purchasing the affected tampons and possibly being injured by them.

Glamour noted that tampons in general have faced criticism as the scientific community has begun to research how their component parts including cotton, bleach, pesticides and fragrances may negatively affect users’ heath.

Happily, no definitive evidence has emerged that normal tampon use can negatively affect a person’s health. But the possibility having a piece of a tampon lodged in a user’s body longer than the recommended length of time certainly has some women worried.

The FDA went on to advise people who used the affected tampons and worry that there may be a piece of a tampon in their body to see a gynecologist instead of trying to fix the problem themselves. The FDA says there have been some reports of “infections, vaginal irritation, localized vaginal injury, and other symptoms” in affected women.

Despite the recall, experts to urge tampon users not to panic. The New York Times quoted Dr. Jill Maura Rabin, who said that “[the Kotex recall] isn’t a call to stop using tampons. It’s a call to know your body. Tampons have been around for a very long time and are fairly safe.”

In sum, people who have purchased U by Kotex Sleek Tampons, Regular Absorbency should check the date on the packaging to determine if their box was one of the recalled boxes, and if it was, stop using immediately. If someone who used a recalled tampon worries that their tampon may have come apart during use and they are experiencing adverse symptoms, the FDA recommends they seek medical attention immediately.
