President Joe Biden announced a new vaccine requirement on Thursday that will affect two-thirds of American workers, the latest bid in his administration’s efforts to curb the spread of COVID-19.  

The vaccine requirement announced by the president will affect up to 100 million American workers, from both private sectors to healthcare workers and federal government contractors, according to the Associated Press.

Vaccination Requirement to Cover Federal, Healthcare, Other Workers 

Under the vaccine requirement, employers with 100 or more workers must mandate the vaccine or get them tested weekly for the virus. Additionally, the president announced that 17 million healthcare workers employed by medical facilities that receive Medicaid or Medicare from the federal government will be subject to a vaccine requirement. 

Millions of employees who work for the government’s executive branch and contractors who do business with the federal government are also now required to take the vaccine, per Biden’s mandate.

During his speech announcing the vaccine requirement, President Biden also criticized Americans who have chosen to not yet get vaccinated against COVID-19, during his speech at the White House on Thursday. 

“We’ve been patient. But our patience is wearing thin, and your refusal has cost all of us,” Biden said. 

Vaccine Requirement Comes After Full FDA Approval

The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine was officially approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Aug. 23. The first COVID-19 vaccines, meanwhile, were granted emergency use authorization by the FDA for individuals aged 16 and older in December 2020. 

Some Republican leaders, such as South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster, reacted angrily and vowed to push back against the new vaccine requirement. 

“The American Dream has turned into a nightmare under President Biden and the radical Democrats. They have declared war against capitalism, thumbed their noses at the Constitution, and empowered our enemies abroad,” McMaster tweeted, following Biden’s announcement. 

“Rest assured, we will fight them to the gates of hell to protect the liberty and livelihood of every South Carolinian,” McMaster added, in a follow up tweet. 

Vaccination Requirement Lawsuits

The federal vaccine requirement may face legal opposition. Indeed, multiple class action lawsuits have been filed for similar mandates. 

One class action lawsuit argued that military members who have already gotten sick and recovered from COVID-19 should be exempt from a vaccine requirement set to go into effect on Sept. 15. 

A total of 2,000 first responders in Hawaii, meanwhile, have joined a class action lawsuit against state government officials over vaccine mandates they say violate their civil rights.
