T-Mobile data leak overview:

  • Who: T-Mobile says a recent data leak was caused by a “temporary system glitch,” while denying it was due to a cyberattack or data breach.
  • Why: A number of T-Mobile app users have reported seeing other customers’ private account data after logging into their own accounts.
  • Where: Nationwide.

T-Mobile said a “temporary system glitch” is what allowed users of its official app to see private account data belonging to other T-Mobile customers last week.

The company spoke out after a number of its customers wrote on social media that they were shown the sensitive account data of other T-Mobile account holders after logging into their own accounts on the company’s official app, The Verge reports

T-Mobile has reportedly connected the data leak to a planned overnight technology update that it said ended up compromising a limited amount of account information belonging to less than 100 of its customers.

The “glitch” has been resolved, according to T-Mobile, which said the data leak was not due to a cyberattack or data breach, according to The Verge.

T-Mobile data leak included credit balances, other private account data, customers say

The data leak exposed credit balances, purchase histories, credit card information, addresses, and phone numbers, according to T-Mobile customers who wrote about the leak on social media last week, Bleeping Computer reports

Some T-Mobile app users reportedly claimed to have even been shown multiple other customers’ private account data when looking at their own accounts, while others remarked that they had previously attempted to alert the company to the issue.

“Reported this issue when it first popped up here on Reddit over 2 weeks ago and sent pics of the other person’s info to their security team. No response, but wow, just wow,” Reddit user bradchapin wrote on Sept. 20.

A class action lawsuit was filed against T-Mobile in January over claims the company failed to protect the personally identifiable information of an estimated 37 million of its customers from being exposed during a November 2022 data breach.

T-Mobile was accused of being negligent and of failing to “exercise reasonable care” to secure the private information of its customers, with the consumer behind the complaint calling the data breach “highly foreseeable.”
