AT&T Customers’ Data Breach Overview:

  • Who: AT&T issued a statement denying it’s data had been breached by a well-known hacker.
  • Why: Hacker, ShinyHunters, reportedly claimed to have gained access to the private information of 70 million AT&T customers and is selling their data online.
  • Where: The reported data breach, if accurate, affects AT&T customers nationwide.

Rumors claim AT&T is the victim of a data breach, with 70 million of its customers’ private information exposed and for sale online. The company is denying the claims.

“Based on our investigation yesterday, the information that appeared in an internet chat room does not appear to have come from our systems,” AT&T said in a statement sent to RestorePrivacy

AT&T acknowledged the leaked data but claimed it did not come from them and that it “can’t speculate,” from where it did.

70 Million AT&T Customers May Face Identity Theft, Fraud

The stolen data reportedly includes personally identifiable information such as names, social security numbers, birthdates, phone numbers, home addresses, and email addresses.

The unconfirmed data breach comes on the heels of rival T-Mobile’ acknowledgment last week that a data breach occurred on its systems. The T-Mobile data breach may have affected more than 100 million of its users. A class action lawsuit has been lodged against the company in response to the incident.

The threat actor in the AT&T customers’ data breach is reportedly a well-known cyber criminal who goes by the name ShinyHunters. The hacker is said to be selling the private data and is asking for $1 million for the entire database in a direct sale, according to RestorePrivacy.

Based on a small sample of the data provided to it by the hacker, it appears to be authentic, concludes RestorePrivacy.

ShinyHunters is reportedly now working on gaining access to customers’ PIN numbers. He is willing to “reach an agreement,” with the company to remove the data, according to the website.

“By the way, if AT&T is afraid and want their database taken off the market, they can contact me for an agreement, it has been done recently and both sides were satisfied,” ShinyHunters reportedly said.

AT&T could potentially face a class action lawsuit if the data breach is confirmed to be affecting it.

The company was served with a class action lawsuit earlier this year that alleged it subjected its customers with unlimited data plans to data throttling. A $12 million settlement was eventually reached
