Zoloft Birth Defect Lawsuit MDL Created to Streamline Settlements
By Kimberly Mirando
Nearly 100 Zoloft birth defect lawsuits have been centralized in a federal multidistrict litigation (MDL) to streamline the process of resolving the cases. The Judicial Panel that approved the Zoloft MDL said they expect hundreds of additional Zoloft birth defect lawsuits to join the multidistrict litigation, which will make reaching a settlement or resolution more faster and efficient.
Plaintiffs in the Zoloft lawsuit MDL claim Pfizer failed to warn the public that Zoloft (sertraline) could cause severe, life-threatening birth defects if taken during pregnancy. Several studies have linked Zoloft to birth defects of the heart, abdomen and cranium, as well as to Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN), and other birth defects. The claims made in Zoloft birth defect lawsuits are similar to those made in Paxil birth defect lawsuits. Many lawsuits in the Paxil MDL have already been settled or resolved. The link between taking SSRI antidepressants during pregnancy and birth defects means other SSRI antidepressants such as Celexa, Lexapro and Prozac may also become the subject of federal litigation.
If you or your child was born with a birth defect you believe was caused by an SSRI antidepressant such as Zoloft, Paxil, Celexa, Lexapro or Prozac, its imperative you speak with an experienced SSRI Birth Defect attorney for a free consultation about your options. Drug makers should be held responsible for failing to adequately warn the public about the risk of SSRI antidepressant birth defects, even though they knew they existed.
