Young Woman Suffers Infertility from Mirena IUD

By Jessica Tyner

Mirena infertility problems“Emily” never had any problems conceiving. She has three healthy children and has experienced five miscarriages in her life. However, after the birth of her third child, she chose Mirena as her contraception of choice until she and her husband could decide if they wanted a larger family. Mirena is a popular IUD, a T-shaped device that’s implanted in the uterus. It’s far surpassed the popularity of copper-T IUDs that many women used in the 1970s, but it also comes with a host of risks.

Unlike the copper IUD, Mirena is made of plastic and releases tiny amounts of hormones in the body. The positive side effect is that many women experience lighter menstrual cycles, many reporting no bleeding at all. That perk was enough to get many women on the Mirena bandwagon when it became popular in the early 2000s. Mirena is suggested for use in women who have “had at least one child.” The reason for this suggestion may not just be because of a larger uterus caused by childbirth.

Emily’s Mirena Nightmare

Emily only had the Mirena for six months before she decided to have it removed and try for another baby. Not understanding why it was so difficult to get pregnant, she opted for four rounds of Clomid, a drug used to stimulate ovulatoin. According to her, Mirena robbed her of her fertility and took her choice for a larger family away from her. Studies have linked Mirena to myriad complications including ectopic pregnancies and infertility; however, Mirena victims claim they were not properly warned of the risks.

Some critics say the bigger reason Mirena is only recommended for women who have had one child is because infertility is a risk. On the other hand, that does little to comfort women and families who want more children. Just like Emily, there are many victims out there suffering from lifelong Mirena side effects. Infertility and ectopic pregnancies are the biggest risks, but there are other painful side effects, too.

What Mirena Does

Any IUD can migrate, but there seems to be more cases of Mirena moving around the body than other options. When the Mirena migrates, it can become lodged in soft tissue and other areas of the body, perforating the uterus or vital organs. This can lead to painful and expensive surgeries, which can be especially damaging to a person without medical insurance. Sometimes there are warning signs like intense pain, but other times the Mirena can continually perforate the body and the woman is unaware.

The US Preventative Services Task Force has stated that women only need pap smears once every three years, and insurance won’t cover more frequent OBGYN visits. Pap smears are often the time when IUDs are checked to make sure they’re in place. When women are being turned away from their OBGYN, this can lead to three full years of Mirena perforation without it being caught.

Did You Choose Mirena?

When Mirena came on the market, it was considered a dream come true for many women. No more PMS, cramps, bleeding and it was the most effective form of birth control besides abstinence. However, if you chose Mirena and experienced complications, you may have a Mirena legal claim.

I had Mirena for 4 years and had it removed because I wanted to try to have another child. Had two children prior to Mirena being placed. However, since having the Mirena removed in 2013, I have not been able to conceive since then. It has become depressing and no one will look into my issue as far as doctor wise. Don’t know what more to do but give up my dream of having another child or two!!

  2. Nancy says:

I had 8 healthy pregnancies/babies prior to getting the Mirena. I never needed fertility treatment. I was able to conceive every single month that I tried. While having the mirena in and being very familiar with my body, I felt something out of place to the left of my cervix. A surgery later revealed that was my left ovary, which had fused to my abdominal wall. I had also developed endometriosis. While having the mirena in, I suffered from severe hair loss, headaches/migraines, neck stiffness and pain, back pain, ringing in my ears, heart pulsing in my ears, pressure in my head, and blurred vision with spots. I still have not recovered even though the Mirena has now been removed. No one bothered to warn me that the Mirena may cause and would cause infertility, otherwise I never would have got it. I have now spent thousands of dollars in fertility treatment. Nothing has worked. It has been 3 years since we started trying for a baby. My life has been ruined by the Mirena.

Have you had any luck yet? We have been trying for four years. Period just went sideways and then stopped as well.
      No problem concebing three before.
I’ve heard a few success stories.
Pray to be one of them .
