Woman Files Mirena Lawsuit Over IUD Migration
By Christina Drury
A Florida woman has filed a Mirena injury lawsuit alleging the IUD birth control device caused severe side effects. Filed in the Superior Court of New Jersey Law Division, the Mirena lawsuit lists the manufacturer of Mirena – Bayer – as the defendant. The lawsuit lists Mirena side effects as having caused emotional as well as physical damages when the IUD failed to remain in place and no warning was issued prior to the migration of the IUD.
The woman had the Mirena IUD implanted in 2008 and began experiencing pelvic pain around July 2010. During a routine check in 2010, she could not locate the strings of the IUD. An ultrasound revealed that the Mirena IUD was not in place and it could not be located on the ultrasound. In December of 2010, the woman had to undergo laparoscopic surgery in order to locate and remove the Mirena IUD.
As a result of the Mirena side effects, the woman is suing for pain and suffering, economic injury due to lost wages as well as severe and permanent physical injuries.
The Mirena injury lawsuit against Bayer also states that Bayer has admitted that it is unsure exactly how the Mirena IUD works to prevent pregnancy. Additionally, the manufacturer has failed to mention that the IUD may spontaneously migrate and only mentions that the Mirena IUD may migrate if the uterus is perforated during implantation. The implantation was successful and the woman, along with her doctor, had no reason to suspect any perforation of the uterus until she began experiencing pelvic pain two years later.
Mirena Side Effects
There have been thousands of Mirena lawsuits filed over similar side effects; more are filed each year as the number of women who rely on the device for pregnancy prevention increases. While some Mirena side effects are as minor as experiencing discomfort, others have been severely impacted by the migration of the device or worse, have experienced internal damage of other organs due to the device.
Bayer has come under scrutiny for unsubstantiated claims that state that the Mirena IUD will help women look and feel better. In addition, they failed to mention that Mirena side effects may include symptoms such as acne, breast tenderness and weight gain amongst other side effects that can be caused by the synthetic hormone known as levonorgestrel.
