Uloric heart attackA Uloric heart attack could occur for a patient who is taking the medication as prescribed by their doctor. A patient who is not aware of the risks of Uloric heart attack could be facing life threatening significant cardiac events.

Some victims of a Uloric heart attack have already been hospitalized and have had to deal with significant side effects.

Uloric, a newer gout medication also known as febuxostat, is promoted as safe and effective for patients but carries the risk of Uloric heart attack.

Uloric Study

A long-term study has concluded that those patients who already have heart disease now face a higher risk of Uloric heart attack and possible death if given this medication.

Many patients say that they were not properly warned about the risks of a Uloric heart attack. In fact, the risk of death from cardiovascular disease linked to Uloric heart attack was more than 30 percent higher than with an older medication known as allopurinol.

When researchers evaluated deaths from any cause, the risk was still 22 percent higher with febuxostat users.

The new Uloric/Allopurinol study was presented at the annual meeting at the American College of Cardiology. The study identified that the rates for serious cardiovascular events such as stroke, non-fatal heart attack, hospitalization for heart failure and heart rhythm problems were comparable across the two drugs, but that the risk of Uloric heart attack and associated fatal injuries was higher when taking the gout medication.

The clinical trial reviewing Uloric risks included more than 6,000 patients who were taking either allopurinol or Uloric. The full results of the Uloric heart attack study have now been published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

What is Gout?

Gout is a form of arthritis that causes pain for patients primarily in their big toe and other joints. More than eight million Americans have been diagnosed with gout.

Uloric is one of the most common medications prescribed to gout sufferers. However, many of the patients who have taken the drug as prescribed by their doctors say that they were never warned about the dangers or risks of Uloric heart attack and were instead left to suffer the consequences of a life threatening cardiovascular issue.

Those patients who have already suffered from a Uloric heart attack and have been hospitalized or dealt with the complications or follow up from a heart attack might have questions for their physicians about whether or not this drug is safe to take. Serious Uloric side effects reported include non-deadly strokes, cardiac ischemia, and non-deadly heart attacks.

Cardiac ischemia could lead to the need for urgent surgery. The Food and Drug Administration has previously addressed concerns over the risk of Uloric heart attack.

The manufacturer of Uloric is Takeda Pharmaceuticals and the recent details about the risk of Uloric heart attack and Uloric related deaths were part of a clinical trial required by the FDA based on the initial clinical trials approving the drug.

Originally approved in 2009 by the FDA, clinical trials early on showed that there was a risk of Uloric heart attack or other serious heart related side effects. However, patients say that they were not told about the risks of developing heart related symptoms or suffering from a Uloric heart attack until it was too late.

In general, Uloric lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
