Two More Join Yaz/Yasmin, Beyaz & Ocella Birth Control Lawsuit Litigation

By Andrea Gressman

Yaz, Yasmin, Ocella, Beyaz side effectsThe number of Yaz, Yasmin, Beyaz, and Ocella birth control lawsuits continues to grow as more and more women are affected by the severe side effects that these prescription contraceptives are known to cause. In fact, two more women have been added to the thousands of women who have already filed a Beyaz lawsuit, Ocella lawsuit, Yaz lawsuit or Yasmin lawsuit, and there is no sign that the growing number of lawsuits is going to slow down any time soon.

Two More Join the Yaz and Yasmin Lawsuit MDL

Evelyn Heidi Cottle and Tara Goggin, both from Colorado, have filed Yaz/Yasmin lawsuits against Bayer alleging serious blood clot side effects. These Yaz and Yasmin lawsuits, which were filed in the Southern District of Illinois, will join a growing Yaz and Yasmin lawsuit MDL (Multidistrict Litigation). Both women are claiming to have suffered serious Yaz/Yasmin side effects after using the oral contraceptives for only a few months.

Goggin started using Yasmin in September 2011 and was diagnosed with DVT — or deep vein thrombosis — in December of the same year. She also suffered from a Yasmin pulmonary embolism that same month. Goggin survived the embolism, but continues to suffer from physical limitations and emotional and mental distress, according to her Yasmin lawsuit. A pulmonary embolism can damage portions of the lung and has led to the death of almost 30 percent of patients who suffer a pulmonary embolism.

Cottle began using Yaz in May 2010 and in October of the same year was diagnosed with Yaz DVT resulting from her use of the birth control pill. DVT is a condition where blood clots form in the deep veins, oftentimes in the legs. As a result of her Yaz blood clot injuries, Cottle is claiming in the Yaz blood clot lawsuit to have suffered pain and emotional distress due to her condition.

The Yasmin/Yaz Lawsuit MDL

In order to handle the hundreds of Yasmin/Yaz lawsuits filed over Yaz blood clot injuries, they have been consolidated into a single court under the jurisdiction of Judge David Herndon, who is overseeing the Yaz lawsuit MDL. Although women filing a Yaz or Yasmin lawsuit do not have to join the Yaz/Yasmin MDL, it is still an option for victims of Yaz blood clots injuries such as pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis. You should discuss this option with a qualified Yaz/Yasmin attorney to understand whether it is better to pursue compensation through the Yaz lawsuit MDL or by filing a Yaz class action lawsuit.  A Yaz class action settlement may provide less compensation than a settlement obtained through they Yaz MDL. An experienced Yaz compensation specialist will be able to review your case to see which course of legal action is best for you.

It is important to note that those who have taken Ocella birth control or Beyaz birth control can also file an Ocella lawsuit or Beyaz lawsuit if they have experienced negative side effects caused by these birth control products. Ocella and Beyaz side effects also include blood clots, pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), heart attack and stroke.

The FDA Requires Stronger Warning for Yaz, Yasmin, Beyaz & Ocella Side Effects

In 2003, the FDA contacted Bayer in objection to their marketing claims that Yaz and Yasmin were superior to other birth control products without having sufficient evidence to support this. The FDA also warned Bayer that they had failed to warn users about the increased potassium levels caused by their products.

Increased potassium levels can lead to serious health problems. Recently, the FDA enforced stronger warning labels on certain birth control products, including Yasmin, Yaz, Beyaz and Ocella. To date, Bayer has negotiated Yaz lawsuit settlements for approximately 700 Yasmin/Yaz lawsuits in conjunction with the Yaz blood clot side effects the FDA order the manufacturers to warn the public about.

Serious Side Effects of Yaz, Yasmin, Beyaz & Ocella Reported

Yaz, Yasmin, Ocella and Beyaz use a progestin known as drospirenone. This new progestin does not have a significant amount of scientific data about it, but post marketing studies have shown it increases the risk of serious side effects such as the following:

* Blood clots leading to PE (pulmonary embolism)
* Stroke
* Heart Attack
* Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
