Study Links Yasmin/Yaz to Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

A new study adds yet another Yasmin/Yaz side effect to the list of complications cited in Yasmin/Yaz lawsuits: irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The revelation could add another source of litigation for Plaintiffs seeking compensation from Bayer for more serious Yaz side effects such as blood clots, stroke, pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis.
Researchers at the University of British Columbia found a link between Yaz, Yasmin and other contraceptives containing the synthetic progestin drospirenone and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Researchers found that .77% of women aged 18 to 46 were diagnosed with IBS within 90 days of using the birth control pills, while only .46% of women using other contraceptives were diagnosed with IBS within the same time period. Even though the total number of women diagnosed with IBS in both groups was less than 1 percent, the women in the Yaz group were almost 75% more likely to develop IBS than those using other birth control methods — a statistically significant difference.
“Our study found a positive association between drospirenone and a diagnosis of IBS that was not observed in other oral contraceptives,” the study authors concluded.
Irritable bowel syndrome can be a debilitating condition that can cause sudden and unpredictable difficulties in the sufferer’s daily life. IBS causes chronic bowel problems such as discomfort, bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea and constipation. While these symptoms may not be as serious as other Yasmin/Yaz side effects like pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis, they can be debilitating enough to affect an individual’s livelihood and career. No Yasmin/Yaz IBS side effect lawsuits have been filed to date, however.
The most common Yasmin/Yaz lawsuit involves Plaintiffs suffering from severe blood clot injuries like pulmonary embolism (PE) and deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Lawsuits seeking compensation for PE and DVT are being settled by Bayer, while lawsuits alleging other Yasmin/Yaz side effects are being placed on the back burner. Bayer has already paid out $142 million in Yasmin/Yaz lawsuit settlements. An analyst with JPMorgan Chase & Co. predicted last April that Bayer may be looking at $2.65 billion in Yasmin settlements to resolve all the thousands of cases pending in the Yasmin/Yaz lawsuit MDL.
