Thousands of Yaz, Yasmin Lawsuit Settlements Awarded to Date
By Andrea Gressman
Bayer recently settled 3,490 Yasmin and Yaz injury lawsuits for a total of approximately $750 million. The Yaz and Yasmin lawsuit settlements resolve claims filed by Yaz and Yasmin birth control users who suffered from certain health issues such as pulmonary embolism or deep vein thrombosis. Unfortunately for Bayer, the pharmaceutical company is not out of the woods yet with more than 8,000 total Yaz and Yasmin lawsuits remaining. Of those, 3,800 more lawsuits remain alleging Yasmin/Yaz pulmonary embolism or deep vein thrombosis side effects. The nearly 5,000 Yaz and Yasmin lawsuits remaining are from plaintiffs complaining of other health injuries; namely gall bladder issues and even sudden death.
Over 12,000 Yaz and Yasmin Lawsuits Have Been Filed to Date
With more than 12,000 Yaz and Yasmin lawsuits filed against Bayer, it has become the largest pending litigation in the U.S. The Yaz and Yasmin lawsuit litigation has even managed to surpass asbestos litigation. However, Yaz and Yasmin plaintiffs are reportedly going to have to wait months or even years once settlement amounts are determined. In fact, several Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella lawsuit attorneys are encouraging plaintiffs to contact them for discussions about post-settlement financing.
The History of Yaz and Yasmin and their Dangerous Side Effects
Bayer is a German pharmaceutical company best known for aspirin, which they first invented in 1897. The company then introduced the oral contraceptive Yaz in 2001 and in 2006 they released another oral contraceptive called Yasmin. Yaz and Yasmin have something in common with the generic form, Ocella, as well as another medical product called Angeliq, which is a hormone product for menopausal women. They all contain a synthetic form of progestin known as drospirenone.
What is really disturbing is that drospirenone works by increasing potassium levels in the blood, which is known as hyperkalemia. If not monitored correctly, hyperkalemia can lead to disturbances in the rhythm of the heart. The blood flow to the heart slows, which can lead to blood clots, heart attack, stroke, and even pulmonary embolus, therefore posing a significant danger to individuals taking medications that contain drospirenone.
Bayer’s Aggressive Marketing Plan Has Made Yaz the Most Popular Birth Control in U.S.
Many women were subjected to drospirenone after they were subjected to the promotion of Yaz and Yasmin via multi-million dollar ad campaigns. Because of those campaigns targeted at women ages 35 and under, Yaz became the most popular birth control pill in the United States. In fact, Yaz was able to generate approximately $1.58 billion in sales in the year 2010 alone. One of the main benefits of Yaz and Yasmin was the reported reduction in water retention and bloating that women often experience with premenstrual disorders. Plaintiffs feel Bayer either knew, or should have known about the side effect risks involved with both oral contraceptive medications and yet they failed to properly warn about them.
