Researchers Offer Explanation for Actos Bladder Cancer Risk as Lawsuits Mount
By Kimberly Mirando
Researchers of a recent study showing long-term Actos use may increase a person’s chances of developing bladder cancer by as much as 83% say they may have found an explanation for the Actos bladder cancer risk, which has been highlighted in thousands of lawsuits against drug maker Takeda Pharmaceuticals.
According to researchers as McGill University in Montreal, taking the diabetes drug Actos for more than two years can increase your risk of developing bladder cancer by as much as 83%. Several studies have already documented this risk, but the McGill University study, published in the British Medical Journal on May 31, 2012, was the first to specifically propose why Actos may increase the risk of bladder cancer.
According to the research team at McGill, a possible explanation for the Actos bladder cancer risk is chronic irritation of the bladder from crystal formations caused by the diabetes drug. This irritation can lead to the formation of bladder tumors and eventually bladder cancer. The researchers cautioned, however, that further research will be needed to establish this as the true cause.
Bloomberg News reported on March 13, 2012 that Takeda Pharmaceuticals could face as many as 10,000 Actos bladder cancer lawsuits in the U.S. from patients suffering serious side effects of their diabetes drug. In fact, so many Actos lawsuits have already been filed that a federal Judicial Panel has consolidated all Actos lawsuits into special multidistrict litigation in the federal court in Louisiana. The case, known as In Re: Actos Products Liability Litigation (MDL 2299) is seeking compensation for thousands of Actos users who suffered severe undisclosed side effects such as bladder cancer, and bladder tumors. With the help of Actos attorneys, these victims are standing up to Takeda and seeking compensation for their severe mental and physical pain and suffering, past and future permanent injuries and emotional distress, and economic loss due to medical expenses and living expenses as a result of a new lifestyle. The majority of Plaintiffs in Actos bladder cancer lawsuits allege Takeda knew about the risk of Actos bladder cancer but chose to hide this information at the cost of patient safety in order to increase their bottom line.
In April 2012, a direct filing order was made to make it easier for individual Plaintiffs to file an Actos injury lawsuit, which is good news for Actos bladder tumor and bladder cancer victims seeking to hold Takeda Pharmaceuticals liable for their injuries for failing to warn them about the serious side effects of taking the drug.
If you or a loved one developed bladder cancer or bladder tumors after taking Actos, an Actos bladder cancer attorney can provide a free consultation to see if you’re a good fit to file an Actos lawsuit. In some cases, surgeons aren’t able to successfully remove and treat an Actos bladder tumor or bladder cancer. This can lead to death and surviving family members may be able to file a wrongful death lawsuit against Takeda Pharmaceuticals.
