Propecia Lawsuits Claim Drug Causes Permanent Side Effects
By Anne Bucher
Since Propecia (finasteride) was approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 1997, thousands of men have relied on the drug to treat their male pattern hair loss. After suffering significant sexual side effects from Propecia, these men have filed lawsuits that accuse the manufacturer of failing to provide adequate warning about the health consequences associated with the drug. These plaintiffs have complained of a variety of Propecia sexual side effects, including:
- Decreased libido
- Erectile dysfunction
- Ejaculation difficulties
- Testicular pain
- Impotence
- Prostate cancer
Despite Merck’s Claims, Many Men Experienced Long-Term Propecia Sexual Dysfunction
Merck, the manufacturer of Propecia, had claimed that most of the Propecia side effects would stop once the patient ceased treatment. However, many men found that their symptoms continued even after they discontinued the use of Propecia. In some cases, their symptoms lasted for over a year. In addition to the physical problems, many men have suffered anxiety and depression after taking Propecia. They fear that the Propecia side effects may have long-lasting, or even permanent, effects on their quality of life. As a result of these lingering side effects, their relationships and careers have suffered.
Thousands of men have filed Propecia lawsuits, claiming that Merck’s failure to warn them about the risk of long-lasting side effects kept them from making an informed decision about whether or not to use the drug. Had they known that Propecia sexual dysfunction could be a long-term consequence, they would never have chosen to take the hair loss drug. While their appearance is important to them, the plaintiffs agree that they would never have sacrificed their sexual health for the promise of a full head of hair. These plaintiffs allege that Merck manufactured a defective product that is unreasonably dangerous.
Propecia Sexual Dysfunction Victims are Taking Legal Action
Victims of Propecia sexual dysfunction have filed lawsuits in all 50 states. A Propecia class action lawsuit was recently approved in Canada. These plaintiffs have taken a stand and intend to hold Merck accountable for the safety of their products.
Due to the high number of Propecia lawsuits filed here in the U.S., they have been consolidated into multidistrict litigation (MDL). In MDL, similar lawsuits that have been filed in federal courts throughout the U.S. are consolidated into one federal court. In the case of the Propecia lawsuit MDL, the pretrial proceedings will be heard by a federal judge in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York. MDL allows pretrial proceedings to be handled more efficiently while preserving the plaintiffs’ right to an individual jury trial.
