NuvaRing Lawsuits Grow Amid New Blood Clot Studies

NuvaRing blood clot New research indicating the contraceptive device NuvaRing can significantly increase a users’ risk of developing dangerous blood clots has spawned a flurry of lawsuits seeking compensation for blood clot injuries. Due to the large number of NuvaRing lawsuits, a federal panel established a multidistrict litigation in Missouri to handle the claims. So far, nearly 1,000 NuvaRing lawsuits have joined the MDL and NuvaRing lawyers expect even more to be filed as blood clot victims learn that NuvaRing may have been the culprit.

NuvaRing was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in October 2001 as the first hormonal vaginal contraceptive ring on the market. NuvaRing is a flexible, soft, two-inch ring that’s worn in the vagina for three weeks while it releases etonogestral (a progestin hormone) and ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen hormone) into the body, preventing pregnancy. NuvaRing was marketed as just as safe — if not safer — than other birth control products on the market, contributing to its profitable success.

It wasn’t long, however, before women started coming forward with serious blood clot injuries they claimed were caused by NuvaRing. These injuries included deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), heart attack and stroke. To date, the FDA has received over 1,000 reports of NuvaRing blood clot injuries or death, and warned users in October 2011 that NuvaRing could increase the risk of blood clots by as much as 56% over traditional birth control pills.

Other NuvaRing blood clot studies show even more alarming statistics. A May 2012 study published in the British Medical Journal linked NuvaRing to a 90% increased risk of blood clots over oral contraceptives. A month later, in June 2012, the New England Journal of Medicine published a study showing NuvaRing users are up to three times more likely to develop blood clots.

These studies have prompted hundreds of NuvaRing users to file lawsuits against Merck and Organon — the companies behind NuvaRing — for failing to warn the public about these risks. According to NuvaRing lawyers, Merck and Organon knew, or should have known, these risks existed, but concealed the risks in order to profit from the sales of the device.
