Mother Sues Pfizer Over Multiple Zoloft Birth Defects

By Matt O’Donnell

Zoloft birth defect lawsuitA mother who claims her child was born with multiple birth defects because she took Zoloft during pregnancy has filed a lawsuit against Pfizer and generic drug manufacturer Greenstone alleging the companies knew the SSRI antidepressant could cause birth defects, but concealed it from the public and medical community. Her Zoloft birth defect lawsuit will join the Zoloft lawsuit MDL established in April 2012, where approximately 100 Zoloft birth defect lawsuits are pending.

The mother’s Zoloft lawsuit states she took Zoloft during her pregnancy, following the instructions of her physician and Pfizer, and was not aware and not informed that the antidepressant has been linked to birth defects. Due to Pfizer and Greenstone’s negligent concealment of the risks, the Plaintiff says her child was born with numerous severe Zoloft birth defects, including cranial and cardiovascular malformations, cleft palate, limb defects, respiratory distress syndrome, and a heart defect. Had she known Zoloft could cause birth defects, she never would have taken the drug during pregnancy, she claims in the lawsuit. Her Zoloft lawsuit further alleges that Pfizer, the manufacturer of Zoloft, and Greenstone, the manufacturer of the generic version of Zoloft (sertraline), were aware of the SSRI antidepressant’s affect on developing fetuses, but deliberately concealed these side effects and failed to warn doctors or consumers.

Most Zoloft birth defect lawsuits cite studies showing that SSRIs – a category of antidepressants that includes Zoloft and Paxil – increase the risk of birth defects if taken during pregnancy. These risks are increased if taken during the third trimester.

Taking SSRIs like Zoloft and Paxil during pregnancy can harm the developing fetus and cause severe birth defects. The most common Zoloft birth defects cited in lawsuits are heart defects, PPHN, skull and brain deformities, cleft lip, cleft palate, anal atresia omphalocele, and limb abnormalities such as clubfoot.

If you took Zoloft or another SSRI antidepressant during pregnancy and your child was born with one or more birth defects, you may have a legal case to pursue compensation from Pfizer. A Zoloft birth defect settlement will not erase the pain and suffering you and your child will have to endure, but it will help alleviate some of the financial burden associated with medical costs, lost wages due to taking care of your child, and more.
