More Women Aware of Mirena IUD Risks

By Jessica Tyner

Local news coverage is finally reporting on the complications women have suffered from the Mirena IUD, but reporters are treating it like these problems are something new. Featured in recent news specials, reporters claim to have “uncovered concerns” about the Mirena IUD, but Mirena risks are something many sufferers know all too well. The FDA has received 70,000+ complaints about Mirena side effects since 2000.

The most common side effect complaint of Mirena is device migration. There have been almost 5,000 women since 2008 who have reported “device dislocation,” but this doesn’t include those that go unreported. There are over 1,300 complaints of Mirena IUD uterine perforation in the past five years. One Mirena victim interviewed said, “I started getting severe pain.” In the ER, an x-ray revealed that her Mirena IUD had completely perforated through the uterine wall and moved to her abdomen.

Mirena Horror Stories

Scanning the FDA’s numerous Mirena complaints, a few key words jump out. “Vaginal hemorrhage,” “device expulsion,” “device breakage” and “loss of consciousness” are just a few. Bayer, the maker of Mirena, is on the defending end of massive litigation over these Mirena side effects. According to these Mirena lawsuits, Bayer didn’t adequately warn physicians or patients about the high risks. There are stories of livers being lacerated or forced appendectomies, hysterectomies and the removal of stomach tissue when the Mirena IUD migrates.

One local news channel mentioned a particularly heartbreaking case of a woman who had to have a sternotomy, which is breaking open the sternum like in open heart surgery, because her IUD had moved into her rib cage. The Mirena IUD is made with a hard, sharp plastic — and it’s placed in a part of the body that’s surrounded by soft, vulnerable tissues and organs. Migration can be painful, lead to risky surgeries and cause permanent damage including infertility.
