A Virginia man recently filed a Xarelto lawsuit against Janssen, alleging its new blood thinner led to excessive and life-threatening bleeding complications.
The plaintiff, David H., began taking the new blood thinner Xarelto in January 2015 at the direction of his doctor. David was prescribed Xarelto in order to treat and/or prevent a condition known as deep vein thrombosis.
However, on January 8, 2015, shortly after he began taking Xarelto, the plaintiff was admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with anemia and gastrointestinal bleeding complications.
The plaintiff’s injuries required blood transfusions and other medical treatment, necessitating multiple days in the hospital.
According to the lawsuit, these side effects were a direct result of his new blood thinner, Xarelto. David’s doctors immediately discontinued his use of Xarelto.
Not only did the plaintiff’s use of Xarelto cause immediate and severe damage in the form of anemia and gastrointestinal bleeding, but will continue to cause suffering and damages in the future in the form of pain and medical expenses.
The Xarelto lawsuit was filed on multiple counts, including negligence, strict products liability, breach of express and implied warranties, fraudulent misrepresentation and concealment, and negligent misrepresentation.
Xarelto Background
Xarelto (also known by its generic name, rivaroxaban) is a relatively new blood thinner medication, manufactured and sold by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a prominent subsidiary of pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson.
Xarelto is a popular new blood thinner, and has dramatically increased in popularity since it was first introduced.
Xarelto is prescribed to treat blood clots and conditions related to clotting including, in the case of David H., deep vein thrombosis. Blood clots can be very dangerous, and in some cases can be fatal, which makes new blood thinner drugs like Xarelto very popular.
However, despite Xarelto’s popularity, a growing number of lawsuits are being filed.
According to such lawsuits, Janssen knew about the potential dangerous side effects about Xarelto, including excessive bleeding problems, yet failed to adequately warn both consumers and the medical community about these Xarelto side effects, thereby placing patients at serious risk.
In extreme situations like a serious accident or an emergency surgery, the body forms blood clots in order to slow bleeding. Patients taking a new blood thinner like Xarelto, however, may be unable to form these life-saving clots in these kinds of situations, and may suffer from Xarelto side effects as a result.
Xarelto Side Effects
Plaintiffs involved in recent Xarelto lawsuits allege a variety of Xarelto bleeding side effects. These include:
- Gastrointestinal bleeding (GI bleeding)
- Rectal bleeding
- Uterine bleeding
- Hemorrhaging
- Brain hemorrhaging
- Hermarthrosis (bleeding into joint spaces)
- Bloody stool
- Heavy vaginal bleeding
- Minor bleeding (nosebleeds, heavy menstrual flow)
Xarelto Lawsuits
Filing a Xarelto gastrointestinal bleeding lawsuit cannot take away the pain and suffering of someone who has experienced severe Xarelto side effects, and cannot bring a loved one back to life. However, a Xarelto lawsuit can at least help to compensate for the financial expenses often incurred by medical bills and lost wages.
If you or someone you love has experienced severe Xarelto side effects like Xarelto gastrointestinal bleeding, or even death caused by Xarelto, you may be able to file a Xarelto lawsuit.
The Xarelto Lawsuit is Case No. 2:17-cv-00142-EEF-MBN, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.
