Lawsuit Claims Yaz Birth Control Caused Pulmonary Embolism Injury
By John Curran
Kathleen Ellis of Illinois is suing Bayer Corporation, claiming that she developed a blood clot in her lung in 2008 as a result of taking the birth control pill Yaz.
According to the Yasmin side effects lawsuit filed directly into multidistrict litigation on October 9, Ellis began taking the oral contraceptive in November 21, 2007. In less than two months, she was diagnosed with Yaz pulmonary embolism side effects.
While not mentioned in the complaint, treatment usually requires blood thinners that are linked to risks of internal bleeding side effects. The plaintiff said that she would not have taken the medication had she known of the potential for a blood clot in her lungs.
The lawsuit stressed that Bayer Corporation should have known the risks involved when using the Yaz birth control pill. By 2007, the complaint notes that there were several studies that indicated a higher likelihood of Yaz pulmonary embolism side effects compared to earlier contraceptive options.
There are currently more than 10,000 Yaz side effects cases. The good news for plaintiffs, like Ellis, is that Bayer decided to settle thousands of these cases rather than going to trials. However, there are still many complaints left to resolve. Since the FDA noted that the hormone “drospirenone… can lead to hyperkalemia in high risk patients, which may result in potentially serious heart and health problems,” the settlements are likely to continue.
The Yasmin Side Effects Lawsuit is Kathleen Ellis v. Bayer Corporation et al., Case No. 13-cv-10842, U.S. District Court, Southern District of Illinois.
