Lawsuit Claims NuvaRing Blood Clot Caused Stroke

A recent NuvaRing lawsuit filed in New Jersey federal court claims a Pennsylvania woman suffered a stroke caused by NuvaRing. Her NuvaRing lawsuit names Merck & Co., Organon Pharmaceuticals, Akzo Nobel NV and Schering-Plough Corp. as Defendants for failing to warn her and other women about the risk of a NuvaRing stroke from using the popular birth control device, which has been linked to a 56% increased risk of blood clots, according to the FDA.
The Plaintiff, Aimee L. Flynn, alleges in the NuvaRing lawsuit that she suffered a stroke on February 5, 2010 caused by a NuvaRing blood clot. Flynn alleges in the NuvaRing lawsuit that she used the NuvaRing contraceptive device from October 2008 through February 2010, when a blood clot allegedly caused by NuvaRing dislodged and traveled to her brain, causing her to suffer a stroke. Numerous studies have linked NuvaRing to an increased risk of blood clot injuries such as stroke, pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis. Flynn joins hundreds of other women suing Merck, Organon, Akzo Nobel and Shering-Plough for failing to warn them about the risk of NuvaRing blood clot injuries. NuvaRing Blood Clot Injuries Documented in Numerous Studies
NuvaRing has been linked to numerous blood clot injuries, including deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, heart attack and stroke. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is caused by a blood clot in one or more of the deep veins in the body. When one of these blood clots dislodges, it can travel to the lungs and block one or more of the arteries, causing pulmonary embolism. Hundreds of NuvaRing lawsuit have been filed by women who suffered one of these NuvaRing blood clot injuries. These lawsuits often cite evidence from studies backing up their claims.
A new study published in the British Medical Journal, found that women who use NuvaRing are 6.5 times more likely to suffer a pulmonary embolism or deep vein thrombosis (DVT) than women who do not use birth control. NuvaRing users are also 90% more likely to have a dangerous blood clot than women who use the pill. Another recent NuvaRing blood clot study, published June 2012 in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that women who took combination estrogen and progestin birth control pills such as Yaz and Yasmin experienced heart attack and stroke up to twice as often as women who did not use hormonal contraception. These risks were up to three times higher for users of NuvaRing and Ortho Evra patches than non-users.
NuvaRing Lawsuit Settlements May Be Close
Despite being a Pennsylvania resident, Flynn’s NuvaRing stroke lawsuit was transferred to New Jersey state court where it joins nearly 125 other NuvaRing lawsuits pending in NuvaRing Mass Tort before Judge Brian R. Martinotti. Judge Martinotti announced in July 2012 that nine of the cases have been selected to go to trial in February 2013 as “bellwether” (or test) cases.
