Is the Mirena IUD Safe for Teenage Girls?

By Anne Bucher

Mirena IUDThe American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) has encouraged doctors to talk to their teenage patients about using the Mirena IUD as a long-lasting birth control method. They believe that these intrauterine devices are much more reliable than oral contraceptives. The “set and forget” nature of them is also a convenient advantage because women do not need to remember to take a daily pill in order to have effective contraception.

The ACOG finds that these long-acting, reversible contraceptive devices are safe and appropriate for most women and teenagers. Because sexually active teenagers and adolescents have a high contraceptive failure rate, these “set and forget” birth control methods are ideal. While the ACOG claims that the Mirena IUD is safe for teenage girls, the dangerous side effects of Mirena must not be ignored. Few studies have focused on teenagers or adolescents who use IUDs.

Mirena IUD Linked to Serious Side Effects

When the Mirena IUD was approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration in 2000, it was highly touted as a low-maintenance means of contraception that was effective for up to five years. However, many women have discovered that certain Mirena IUD side effects are far more common and severe than its warning label suggests.

Many adult women who have used the Mirena IUD have suffered severe side effects from the contraceptive device. Some women’s bodies reject the device. In other women, the Mirena IUD migrates from the uterus to other parts of the body. When the IUD migrates, it often causes damage to the organs it comes in contact with. It can also perforate the uterus.

When women suffer uterine perforation from the Mirena IUD, serious complications can follow. In a recent Mirena IUD lawsuit, the plaintiff experienced a perforated uterus. When she went to the hospital for treatment, she was diagnosed with a slow heartbeat and renal failure. She underwent surgery to have the IUD removed from her body, hoping that the discomfort would subside. However, she continues to experience pain, cramping and heavy periods.

Mirena IUD Lawsuits

Numerous Mirena IUD lawsuits have been filed by women who have experienced debilitating side effects. They allege that Bayer, the manufacturer of the Mirena IUD, failed to warn of the potential complications associated with the contraceptive device. The plaintiffs claim that they never would have chosen this form of contraception if they had known of the health risks. Some women have suffered from infertility as a result of the Mirena IUD.

If you have suffered debilitating Mirena side effects such as device migration, uterine perforation, infertility, infection or more, contact an attorney today. You could join a Mirena IUD class action lawsuit against Bayer. You may be able to receive compensation to pay for the medical expenses and emotional distress you experienced because of your Mirena IUD injury.
