Fresenius Denies Problems with GranuFlo Side Effect Procedures

By John Curran

kidney dialysis heart attackGranuFlo and NaturaLyte injury attorneys note that internal documents from Fresenius Medical Care indicated that the risk of heart failure linked to these kidney dialysis treatments was six to eight times higher compared to other chemicals. A company statement said that there was nothing wrong with continued usage. In fact, they said the chemicals were safe.

Plaintiffs who have suffered from NaturaLyte cardiac arrest would disagree. While Fresenius Medical Care says the chemicals simply require consistent testing, it is unclear why that was not completed. In 2011, the chief medical scientist for the German company noted nearly 1,000 events related to heart attacks and other cardiac problems over the course of a single year.

In addition, the kidney dialysis treatment centers run by Fresenius were informed of the problems related to GranuFlo side effects soon after the internal company report was released. It is unclear why the company would choose to minimize the use of these chemicals if it thought they were safe. Worse for some, it continued to knowingly sell them to other dialysis centers like those run by DaVita, even as it wound down its own usage.

GranuFlo side effects attorneys note that testing would have likely minimized the risks for many of their clients. Both cleaning agents increase the amount of bicarbonates in the blood stream. It has been common knowledge among medical practitioners for years that high levels lead to cardiac events, including increased heart rates that can lead to cardiac arrest and other side effects. Why this testing was not done, especially since the cleaned blood enters the body directly through the heart, remains unclear.

Cases are mounting against the company, and it is evident that perhaps hundreds of thousands of people were at risk, and many thousands likely suffered as a result. Note that in one year, cardiopulmonary conditions at just one-fourth of Fresenius facilities numbered 941. That would mean that roughly 3,600 patients would suffer from problems because of just one treatment provider in a single year.

People who did not realize that the dialysis drugs could be linked to problems they suffered or saw their loved ones deal with should know that legal options are available.
