Doctor visits hospitalized woman.A new vaginal mesh lawsuit has been filed by a Texas woman alleging she experienced severe complications from the Pelvicol mesh implant manufactured by Covidien.

The plaintiff alleges in the Covidien Pelvicol lawsuit that she received the vaginal mesh implant on December 3, 2003 in order to treat pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence. What she got instead, however, was a host of complications and side effects that turned out to be worse than the conditions she was trying to treat.

Stress urinary incontinence means that an involuntary amount of urine leaks when there is pressure applied to the bladder. This often occurs when someone sneezes or laughs. It is also very common in women. POP (pelvic organ prolapse) is when there is a dropping or sagging in the woman’s pelvic organs. Vaginal mesh implants such as Pelvicol mesh are surgically installed and designed to provide extra support to women who suffer from these issues.

Shortly after receiving the Pelvicol vaginal mesh implant, however, the plaintiff claims she began to experience severe side effects following her surgical procedure. It is for these injuries that she is seeking compensation as well as punitive damages. She is charging the vaginal mesh implant manufacturer with the following:

  • Breach of warranty
  • Failure to warn
  • Negligence

FDA Provides Warning of Vaginal Mesh Implant Side Effects

There have been thousands of reports of women suffering from severe vaginal mesh implant side effects. Some of these side effects include the following:

  • Bleeding
  • Dyspareunia
  • Extrusion
  • Infections
  • Mesh erosion
  • Organ perforation
  • Pain
  • Scarring

As the vaginal mesh implant devices have become more popular, so have the number of complaints of serious side effects. It has been reported that from January 1, 2005 to December 31, 2007, there were 1,000 women who reported vaginal mesh implant side effects. Then, from January 1, 2008 to December 31, 2010, there were 2,874 side effect complaints. This prompted the FDA to issue a public safety warning on July 13, 2011. They said that vaginal mesh implant side effects were “not rare” and also mentioned that correcting these issues may take several surgeries and, even then, it may not fully resolve the side effect issues.

The FDA went on to allege that approximately 10% of all the women who use a vaginal mesh implant end up experiencing complications within one year of receiving the device. However, there still has not been a vaginal mesh implant recall despite the thousands of victims and the growing number of vaginal mesh implant lawsuits.
