Birth Control Pills with Drospirenone Linked to Blood Clot Injuries
By Christina Drury

Currently there is multidistrict litigation pending in the Southern District of Illinois to handle the lawsuits that continue to be filed against Bayer for problems resulting from women’s exposure to drospirenone (MDL No. 2100). The official title of the MDL is “Yasmin and Yaz Marketing, Sales Practices and Products Liability Litigation.
Yaz Side Effects
Women who take oral contraceptives should examine its label to see if it contains drospirenone. The Yaz side effects that indicate possible complications include:
- Swelling on the thigh, ankle or foot
- Cramps that begin in your calf
- Pain in your foot or ankle,
- An area of skin that feels warmer or is pale, reddish or bluish Â
If you think you have one of these symptoms, immediately get to your doctor and tell him you have taken an oral contraceptive with drospirenone.
The most noted danger is not the existence of the blood clot itself, but the damage it can cause when it dislodges. Yaz side effects that can occur when the blood clot travels include:
- Deep vein thrombosis
- Heart attack
- Stroke
Each of these Yaz side effects has the potential to be fatal or cause significant injuries, which is why time is of the essence.
Bayer Sets Aside Funds for Yaz Lawsuit Settlement
Bayer, a German-owned drug company, has set aside over $862.5 million to settle Yaz lawsuits that have been filed and are pending filing. Although this money is only to settle lawsuits concerning blood clot claims, the use of Yaz and other oral contraceptives, including Yasmin and Ocella, is also thought to cause gallbladder problems. Predictions are that Bayer will end up paying over $1.5 billion to settle all claims that are currently outstanding.
In this ongoing MDL, 12,000 claims have been filed. Bayer is only addressing the blood clot claims at this time. They have already paid out $750 million to settle 3,490 legal claims for blood clots and related injuries. There are still 3,800 claims pending and more are being filed every day.
In 2011, the FDA published a report that states drugs like Yaz and counterparts Yasmin and Ocella can increase the likelihood of blood clots, deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. It took Bayer until April of 2012 to update its labels, which put the health of many women at risk.
