Bayer’s New IUD Questioned in Light of Mirena IUD Problems
By Andrea Gressman
Despite all of the Mirena lawsuits that have been flooding the court system with claims of severe side effects caused by the Mirena IUD, the FDA went on to approve yet another intrauterine device that will be manufactured by none other than Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, Inc. — the same manufacturer as the Mirena IUD. The new Mirena IUD alternative is referred to as “Skyla” and, like the Mirena IUD, also releases levonorgestrel into the user’s system.
With this recent announcement many are asking the question of whether or not women need another IUD manufactured by Bayer when it’s current IUD is embroiled in litigation. Some are taking it a step further and asking whether or not consumers need any additional birth control options from Bayer as the number of Yaz, Yasmin, Safyral and Beyaz lawsuits continue to rapidly increase as well.
Although Skyla’s “T” shaped IUD differs slightly in measurements from the Mirena IUD, this does little to comfort those who have experienced severe side effects from Mirena and are wondering if Skyla will cause the same injuries. There also seems to be some question as to why Bayer would come out with another IUD birth control option that would compete with their own Mirena IUD. One answer could be that Bayer may be worried about the future of the Mirena IUD and how the many Mirena lawsuits may affect its future. However, those speculations are likely to never be confirmed by Bayer themselves.
Skyla does come with many side effect risks that are reminiscent of the Mirena IUD. These include the following:
- Ectopic/Intrauterine Pregnancy
- Embedment
- Expulsion
- Life Threatening Infections
- Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
- Perforation
Although other countries have been critical of Bayer’s birth control options, the manufacturer has indicated they do plan to offer Skyla worldwide. The new IUD will be marketed as “Jaydess” in European countries.
What is concerning to many is that when the Mirena IUD was originally placed on the market it had been approved for women who had given birth to at least one child. It appears that Bayer plans on marketing Skyla to a much younger age group. This may be a cause of concern because now much younger girls may be exposed to the severe side effects that Mirena users face. These include some of the following:
- Abscesses
- Birth of a child with a birth defect
- Embedment in the uterus
- Erosion of adjacent areas such as the vagina
- Infertility
- Inflammation of the membrane that lines the abdominal cavity and internal organs (Peritonitis)
- Intestinal perforations or obstruction
- Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
- Perforation of the uterus
If you have experienced a Mirena IUD side effect such as perforation of the uterus, infertility, or you gave birth to a child with a birth defect and believe that it was because of a Mirena IUD birth control device, you need to know your legal options. I had the Skyla for almost an year. I had a period for the majority of the time I had the Skyla. Then when I went to get it taken out I found out I was pregnant. At first they thought I was pregnant with twins and I was losing a baby. After an extremely emotional roller coaster. I ended up having eptooic pregnancy. It has been very difficult for my family.
My daughter just had the skyla. Iud put in with I. The last 4mths. She has had severe hair loss. Being 25 she is feeling depressed and just down right heart broken. Can you tell me please can something can be done please I’m desperate to find a solution.
