Bayer Reaching More Yasmin Lawsuit Settlements
By Kimberly Mirando
Bayer recently announced it has settled hundreds of additional lawsuits claiming its Yasmin line of birth control pills (which include Yasmin, Yaz and Beyaz) caused blood clots in women. As of July 31, 2012, Bayer has paid more than $402 million in Yasmin lawsuit settlements to women who suffered serious Yasmin side effects, including pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis. Bayer has resolved more than 1,900 Yasmin/Yaz/Beyaz lawsuits alleging the birth control pills caused blood clots that can lead to heart attacks and strokes. Bayer announced it has paid $402.6 million in settlements so far, for an average payout of about $212,000 per case. The company apparently expects to settle even more lawsuits, because it also announced it has set aside more than $610 million — more than doubling its reserve for Yasmin/Yaz/Beyaz lawsuits.
