Are Zoloft/Paxil/Celexa Birth Defect Side Effects Worsened By Grapefruit Juice?

By John Curran

SSRI antidepressant birth defectsMany expectant moms drink citrus juice from fruits like oranges and grapefruit as part of their breakfast. Juice has a number of nutrients like Vitamin C, yet some scientists are arguing that drinking grapefruit juice could be a bad idea when it comes to SSRI antidepressant birth defect concerns, because it can increase the side effects of Zoloft, Celexa, Paxil, Prozac and other popular medications.

Parents know that what mom eats, so too does the child she carries to term. Studies show that grapefruit juice changes the body’s chemistry for up to 24 hours, causing more of a drug to enter the blood stream, resulting in dangerous antidepressant birth defect side effects. One of the compounds in grapefruit juice, called furanocoumarin, can block an enzyme in the small intestine that aids in drug metabolization, which can increase absorption of the medication ingredients. This means that pregnant women who drink grapefruit juice while taking an SSRI antidepressant can increase the amount of the drug thatís absorbed into the body, causing a greater risk of SSRI antidepressant birth defects.

It’s frustrating enough for families who have made claims through SSRI birth defect class action lawsuit attorneys that their children have suffered birth defects caused by Zoloft, Paxil, Celexa, Prozac and other SSRIs. If a small change in diet could limit that risk, however, it hasn’t been mentioned enough by the media.  Parents need to be aware that the risk of Zoloft birth defects, Paxil birth defect, Celexa birth defects, Prozac birth defects and other SSRI antidepressant birth defects can be increased by drinking grapefruit juice.

If grapefruit juice is one way to avoid needing to consult an SSRI birth defect class action lawsuit attorney, it would save families trauma and stress. The most common birth defects of antidepressants like Celexa and Paxil are heart and skull defects in newborns. In some cases, the skull isn’t fully formed, while in others there are one or more holes in the heart as a result of Prozac birth defect side effects. They’re especially likely if the medication was taken during the first trimester, and throughout the pregnancy.

If you and your family have suffered as a result of SSRI birth defect side effects, you don’t have to shoulder the burden alone.
