Actos & Avandia May Increase Risk of Macular Edema, More Lawsuits Expected?

A new study found that Actos (pioglitazone) and Avandia (rosiglitazone) may substantially increase the risk of macular edema in type 2 diabetics. Actos and Avandia are in the thiazolidinedione or glitazone class of drugs used to treat type 2 diabetes. The study showed that diabetics using a glitazone class of drug like Avandia or Actos had a 1.3% chance of developing macular edema compared to just .2% of type 2 diabetics who weren’t on Avandia or Actos. Takeda Pharmaceuticals, the maker of Actos, has been battling Actos bladder cancer lawsuits since 2011 and the number of bladder cancer lawsuits continues to grow. Actos lawsuits typically allege that Takeda Pharmaceuticals didn’t adequately warn patients and doctors of the increased risk of bladder cancer if they took Actos for more than one year. Diabetics who took Actos or Avandia may file a similar lawsuit if they develop macular edema if Actos and Avandia attorneys find evidence that Takeda Pharmaceuticals or GlaxoSmithKline knew about the increased risk of developing the debilitating condition which can lead to permanent blindness.
The risk of developing macular edema continued to be 2.3x higher than those not taking Actos or Avandia through ten years of follow-up after adjustment for the use of other cardiovascular and type 2 diabetes drugs, glucose control, and other factors the study reports. The group in charge of the study, report online in the Archives of Internal Medicine, wrote that “Clinicians should be vigilant in the clinical screening for diabetic macular edema among those patients taking thiazolidinediones.” The study also noted that Actos (pioglitazone) doesn’t appear any safer than Avandia (rosiglitazone.)
The new study doesn’t make a definitive link between macular edema and the use of Actos or Avandia. In fact, a commentary attached to the study , by Sonal Singh, MD, MPH, and Jodi B. Segal, MD, MPH, notes that prior trials and observational studies have produced conflicting results.
It’s important that any decision to use Actos or Avandia is made in partnership with the prescribing physician and the patient. Side effects like congestive heart failure, bone fractures and peripheral edema may be caused by both Avandia and Actos. In addition, Avandia also increases the risk of myocardial ischemia and Actos is known to increase the risk of bladder cancer. Symptoms of bladder cancer include tumors which may cause blood in the urine, painful or frequent urination, or straining during urination.
