Current Status of NuvaRing Lawsuit Litigation
By Andrea Gressman
Many NuvaRing lawsuits continue to be filed across the United States. It has been reported that all NuvaRing lawsuits filed in the federal courts are being consolidated to the NuvaRing lawsuit MDL in the Eastern District of Missouri. However, there still have been a number of individual NuvaRing lawsuits filed in state court systems throughout the United States, including the New Jersey state court. The defendants named in these NuvaRing lawsuits include Merck subsidiaries Organon USA Inc., Organon Pharmaceuticals USA Inc., Schering Plough Corp., Organon International Inc., and Akzo Nobel NV.
The Honorable Judge Rodney Sippel is currently overseeing the NuvaRing lawsuit MDL. This is to help avoid any ruling that may be contradictory as well as any duplicate discovery proceedings. By having one judge oversee everything it is estimated to improve the efficiency of the litigation process. The bellwether trial has been set to begin on May 6, 2013 and will involve just a few of the NuvaRing lawsuits.
The first NuvaRing lawsuit that will begin trial involves a 33-year-old woman who experienced a NuvaRing pulmonary embolism. This will help to evaluate how the juries will potentially respond to the evidence presented in the NuvaRing litigation process.
NuvaRing Linked to a Number of Severe and Potentially Deadly Side Effects
The NuvaRing is a very popular birth control option because it only requires a once-a-month implant of a contraceptive vaginal ring. This was approved by the FDA in October of 2001. NuvaRing reportedly releases controlled amounts of etonogestrel and ethinyl estradiol (EE), which work together in order to modify female hormones and prevent pregnancy. However, NuvaRing has been linked to several severe and potentially fatal side effects. These include the following:
* Blood Clots
* Pulmonary Embolism
* Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
* Heart Attack
* Stroke
* Death
NuvaRing and the Increased Side Effect Risk of Developing a Blood Clot
It has been found that using NuvaRing can substantially increase a patient’s side effect risk for developing a blood clot. This can lead to very serious and potentially deadly injuries. Also known as thrombosis, the blood clot occurs when blood cells group together in the person’s vein. This restricts the blood flow. If a blood clot develops in the deep veins of the person’s legs, arms, or pelvis, this is then referred to as Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). This is a very serious matter because it can restrict the blood flow to the lungs, heart, or even brain.
If the blood clot develops and then breaks off to travel into the blood stream, it is possible for it to get lodged in or near the lung, which will result in the patient developing a Pulmonary Embolism. This is a severe NuvaRing side effect because the pulmonary artery is the primary intake valve of blood that goes into the lungs. If this artery becomes blocked then the body could potentially suffer from a lack of oxygen.
Because of the severity of these side effects, there are currently NuvaRing lawsuit attorneys investigating situations where NuvaRing users claim to have experienced these dangerous side effects.
If you or someone you love has experienced on or more of the side effects associated with NuvaRing, including blood clots, Pulmonary Embolism, Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), heart attack, stroke, or even death, it is important to contact a qualified NuvaRing lawsuit attorney right away.
