265 Propecia Lawsuits Filed Alleging Sexual Dysfunction
By Andrea Gressman
On November 9, 2012, Merck & Co. released the company’s 3rd quarter earnings report which reported that they have had 265 Propecia lawsuits filed against them by 415 different plaintiffs. As of September 30, 2012, these lawsuits were still pending in the New Jersey Superior Court and the New York federal court. Each of these Propecia lawsuit plaintiffs claim that they have experienced sexual dysfunction due to the plaintiffs taking Propecia. Many of these Propecia lawsuits go on to claim that there side effects have lasted long after the Propecia user stopped taking the medication as well.
Due to the high number of Propecia lawsuits filed, there has been a Propecia lawsuit MDL established to streamline the litigation process for the large amount of cases. It has been consolidated to the Eastern District of New York and is referred to as Propecia (Finasteride) Product Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2331. There has also been a group of consolidated Propecia lawsuits that are currently being heard in the New Jersey Superior Court, Middlesex County. It is referred to as In Re: Propecia Litigation, No. 623, N.J. Super. Ct.
A Propecia lawsuit attorney recently commented on the Propecia lawsuit situation by saying, “We continue to hear from men who have suffered persistent sexual side effects after they stopped using Propecia. It’s not surprising that plaintiffs continue to file Propecia sexual dysfunction lawsuits in these litigations.”
Propecia Side Effects – Sexual Dysfunction
Propecia was originally approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration to treat male pattern baldness. However, in April of 2012 the FDA stated that Propecia would be updating their warning label to reflect the many sexual side effects Propecia has been associated with. Some of the common Propecia sexual side effects have been known to affect the user’s libido, orgasm, as well as their ejaculation. These Propecia side effects evidently continued on after the patient discontinued their Propecia use. There have been additional side effect complaints of men struggling with infertility as well as poor semen quality. However, these side effects have reportedly normalized or even improved after the individual stopped taking the medication.
The Journal of Sexual Medicine published a study in July of 2012 where they had discovered that sexual dysfunction associated with Propecia could potentially last months after the patient stopped using the medication. Another common Propecia side effect is depression. In August of 2012 the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry reported that 75% of the side effect symptoms that had been reported involved depression. Shockingly, 41% of the Propecia users reported having suicidal thoughts.
