Zoloft Birth Defect Studies Spark Lawsuits

By Mike Holter

Zoloft birth defect lawsuitA number of studies linking the antidepressant Zoloft to PPHN, heart problems and other birth defects are fueling lawsuits filed by parents whose children were born with birth defects after the mother took Zoloft during pregnancy. Zoloft is a popular SSRI antidepressant used to treat depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder and other psychological problems. Many women who took the drug during pregnancy, however, are reporting serious side effects, including Zoloft birth defects.
Zoloft Linked to PPHN, Heart Defects & Other Birth Defects

One of the most common Zoloft birth defects cited in lawsuits is persistent pulmonary hypertension in the newborn, or PPHN. PPHN is caused by an infant’s circulation system not adapting outside the womb, which can result in high blood pressure in the lungs. This potentially fatal Zoloft birth defect has been documented in the New England Journal of Medicine, which found that infants born to mothers who took SSRI antidepressants such as Zoloft were nearly 6 times more likely to give birth to a child with PPHN.

Another common Zoloft birth defect is cardiac malformation, or heart defects. Lawsuits have cited numerous Zoloft heart defects such as atrial septal defects, ventricular septal defects, tetralogy of fallot, hypoplastic left heart syndrome, transposition of the great arteries (TGA or TOGA), coarctation of the aorta (CoA), and many more.
Also published in the New England Journal of Medicine was a study linking Zoloft to omphalocele, a condition that causes an infant to be born with his or her abdominal organs outside the abdomen. Other Zoloft birth defects cited in lawsuits include skull and brain malformations (anencephaly and craniosynostosis).
Zoloft Lawsuits Consolidated
So many Zoloft birth defect lawsuits have been filed that the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation decided on April 12, 2012 to combine the cases into one MDL. The Zoloft birth defect MDL, held in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, continues to grow as parents file lawsuits against Pfizer seeking compensation to help cover their child’s medical bills. The majority of lawsuit Plaintiffs claim they were not adequately warned about the potential side effects of taking Zoloft during pregnancy.
