Hometrust Mortgage agreed to a class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims it failed to prevent a 2022 data breach.
The settlement benefits individuals whose personal information was potentially compromised in a July 2022 Hometrust Mortgage data breach.
According to the class action lawsuit, Hometrust failed to implement reasonable cybersecurity measures which could have prevented a data breach in July 2022. The breach reportedly compromised names, contact information and Social Security numbers.
Hometrust Mortgage is a mortgage lender based in Houston, with locations in Texas and New Mexico.Â
Hometrust hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay an undisclosed sum to resolve the data breach class action lawsuit.
Under the terms of the settlement, class members can receive several benefits including reimbursement, cash payments and credit monitoring.
Class members can receive reimbursement for data breach-related economic damages that have not been reimbursed by another third party. There is no expense reimbursement limit listed on the settlement website.Â
Similarly, class members can claim up to 10 hours of lost time at a rate of $40 per hour, for a maximum lost-time reimbursement of $400.
Class members who did not experience economic losses or lost time can opt to receive a cash payment of $50 instead of any reimbursement.
All class members are eligible for one year of free credit monitoring and identity restoration services provided by Equifax. These services include three-bureau monitoring, fraud alerts and more.
The deadline for exclusion and objection is Sept. 11, 2023.
The final approval hearing for the Hometrust Mortgage class action lawsuit settlement is scheduled for Nov. 17, 2023.
In order to receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a reimbursement form and/or cash payment form by Sept. 11, 2023.
