British Airways agreed to a class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims it failed to properly refund consumers for flights canceled due to COVID-19.

The settlement benefits consumers who purchased a ticket for a British Airways flight that was canceled between March 1, 2020, and Dec. 31, 2021, where the customer did not cancel the flight or fail to show up, the customer did not receive a refund or rebooking and the customer received a voucher from British Airways that they have not used.

British Airways is a global airline that connects travelers to and from the United Kingdom. Recently, the airway has had to cancel hundreds of trips due to staff shortages. In 2020 and 2021, the airline was forced to cancel flights for another reason — COVID-19.

Countless airlines were forced to cancel their flights due to COVID-19. Although airlines eventually adapted to the pandemic to continue operations, consumers took legal action against British Airways for canceled flights. Consumers say they were denied refunds for canceled flights. Instead, British Airways allegedly issued vouchers for future travel.

British Airways hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to a class action settlement to resolve these allegations. The settlement fund total is not public.

Under the terms of the settlement, class members can receive a full refund for canceled flights scheduled for March 1 to Nov. 19, 2020.

In addition, these consumers can also receive additional payments. Additional payments will be either 4% of the value of their unused flight voucher or $25, whichever is greater.

Class members whose flights were scheduled for Nov. 20, 2020, to Dec. 31, 2021, can receive a refund for the full amount of their unused voucher. The voucher will then be canceled.

Settlement deadlines vary depending on each class members’ notice ID.

For class members who received a notice ID that starts with BRA1, the deadline for exclusion and objection is Oct. 11, 2022.

For class members who received a notice ID that starts with BRA2, the deadline for exclusion and objection is Oct. 25, 2022.

The final approval hearing is scheduled for Nov. 15, 2022, regardless of notice ID.

In order to receive benefits from the British Airways class action lawsuit settlement, class members must submit a valid claim form.

Class members who received a notice ID that starts with BRA1 must submit a valid claim form by Oct. 3, 2022.

Class members who received a notice ID that starts with BRA2 have until Oct. 25, 2022, to submit a claim form.
