Mitsubishi agreed to a $8.5 million class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims it equipped certain Mitsubishi vehicles with defective airbag control units.
The Mitsubishi settlement benefits current and former owners and lessees of 2013-2017 Mitsubishi Lancer, 2013-2015 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, 2013-2015 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart, 2013-2016 Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback and 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander vehicles. Drivers can check their eligibility using the VIN lookup tool on the settlement website.
Plaintiffs in the class action lawsuit claim Mitsubishi equipped certain vehicles with defective ZF-TRW airbag control units. These defective components in Mitsubishi airbag units allegedly malfunctioned during collisions, resulting in airbag non-deployment and other safety failures.
Mitsubishi is an automotive manufacturer that sells vehicles around the world, including in the United States.
Mitsubishi hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to the $8.5 million settlement to resolve the airbag class action lawsuit.
Under the terms of the Mitsubishi settlement, class members can receive a cash payment and vehicle inspection. Class members who submit a valid claim can receive up to $250 per vehicle. Exact payments will vary depending on the number of claims filed and other factors.
The settlement also provides a robust inspection program for class vehicles. Class members can receive an inspection if they are involved in a qualifying accident.
If any funds remain in the settlement after initial payments are distributed, claimants may receive a second round of payments of up to $750. If remaining funds do not justify a second distribution, the money will be donated to a charitable cause.
The deadline for exclusion and objection is Feb. 27, 2025.
The final approval hearing for the Mitsubishi airbag settlement is scheduled for April 7, 2025.
To receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by May 8, 2026.
