Green Dot prepaid credit cardIn a class action lawsuit, Green Dot prepaid card consumers claim that the cards aren’t reliable and easy to use, as the company advertises.

Plaintiffs Curtis Jackson and Antoinette Chapman say that they decided to acquire Green Dot cards at least in part because they were advertised as convenient, secure, and easy to use.

However, the plaintiffs allegedly discovered that this was not the case, claiming that the company that supplies the cards, Green Dot Corporation, lost their money, transferred it to another card without telling them, or made the funds unavailable.

The Green Dot class action argues that these experiences aren’t unique to the plaintiffs, as many Green Dot users have noted similar issues.

The plaintiffs claim that they were financially injured by Green Dot Corporation’s action to make their money inaccessible, or in some cases, Green Dot’s loss of their money entirely.

According to the Green Dot prepaid card class action lawsuit, thousands of people have already made similar complaints about the cards to the company itself, so the company knew or should have known that the cards were not performing as advertised.

Jackson and Chapman say Green Dot continues to market and sell cards that are not effective, secure, or easy to use, despite their knowledge to the contrary.

The Green Dot class account lawsuit argues that the profits Green Dot Corporation gained from the sale of the cards are, as a result, unjustly earned.

The two customers aim to represent Missouri and Pennsylvania residents who purchased Green Dot cards and had their money transferred without their consent, who experienced Green Dot lose their money, or for whom Green Dot made their money unavailable.

In Jackson’s case, he claims that he purchased a refillable debit card from Green Dot in 2017, and on or around June 5, 2018, he obtained a short term loan for the amount of $1,206.20 and had the proceeds transferred to the Green Dot card.

Allegedly, the company told him that his money would be available by June 12, 2018, and he received a note from the company to that effect on the 12th. He says that he attempted to use the funds but the card did not function.

Jackson says that when he logged onto the Green Dot app on his smart phone to resolve the issue, he received a message saying that his account was blocked, and received no help from the company’s customers service.

The Green Dot prepaid card class action says that from this event, Jackson lost the money from the loan and lost access to a storage unit that he was going to pay for with the money from the loan, and in that storage unit was thousands of dollars of possessions, that he also lost access to.

Chapman claims that she loaded $2,500 onto a Green Dot card around December 2016 or January 2017, and attempted to use the card on May 19, 2017 for a $67 purchase.

Allegedly, all further transactions were denied and she was told by a customer service representative that Chapman had activated three cards, none of which had money on them.

The Green Dot class action states that Chapman was then told that her money had been found and would be returned to her, but this was not the case and the money did not become available.

Jackson and Chapman are represented by Nathan A. Duncan of Douglas Haun & Heidemann PC.

I’m in agreement with all the other customers about green dot cards. I bought a green dot card .on October 31st of 2023 at 11:28am put 390.dollars on it, tryed registering the card three seconds after my purchase within the store..was denied, because there wasn’t an account for me, because the amount was in someone else’s name and info..I asked the cashier right then and was told to call greendot directly. That when I found out my money was already being spent down to .18cents..after explaining that I had the card and receipt while in the store with cashier..so agent put a hold on the c money, so the purchase wouldn’t go through. I filed a complaint..was told after the investigation I would receive a card with my funds or a paper check..I waited two weeks and was told to , file another complaint. It’s been about five months now still no money as been refunded only a text said no record of an account was discovered. and sorry for my inconvenience and patience. still I text what about my funds..the same response was given..now I know I’m not the only person this is happening to..I’m been using greendot for a number of years for this to start …

This makes the 4th time Green Dot has not replaced my money for refund from returned purchases. Per Green Dot they never took the money but my account balance always says different. Dates are 2/29/24 for $199. 99. They even went as far as erasing the transaction all together transaction date 10/24/23 for $15.90 10/7/23 $49.17 and 8/30/23 for $39.93 I even have proof . I have learned to take a screen shot of all returns and refunds. How can I get my money back?

On or around Feb 22 2024 I recieved a message from greendot stating that my account has been blocked due to suspicious activity. I have called on numerous occasions to address the issue and was told to send in a copy of my driver’s license front and back to an email they provided. Upon doing this I was told it would take two to three days to verify the information I provided to remove the block from my account. I called back two days later only to be told they could not use the documents I provided because they weren’t sufficient or too blurry to read. So again I was told to resubmit the same documents again and to wait two more days. This has went on now for over a week and a half. Everytime I call I am told to either resubmit these same documents or to wait two to three days. I am now in the process of losing my home and me vehicle not to mention without food and other utilities because I do not have access to the funds available in my account. I could not even transfer the funds from that account to a new account because of the block on the existing account. This sounds like a clever way for them to rob me of my hard earned money. Please add me to this lawsuit and help me retrieve the funds that are rightfully mine.

My account was hacked multiple times and I am still waiting on my dispute money. I feel like I am being scammed again by Green Dot bank . Shouldn’t they send checks registered mail to guarantee results for the consumer. They still have not paid back everything I reported on the scams. I will no longer bank with them. Been using them for years but not any more losers…

  7. Ciera Macchiaverna says:

My card and account were blocked for 2 weeks, after many times of calling (sitting on hold for hours)and chatting through the website, sending multiple emails containing photos of my ID it was finally unblocked, then I find out I can’t even take my money off, whats the point of a savings account on a card where you can’t take funds off? I’ve seen so many crazy stories of them robbing people and they should be shut down. This is ridiculous. I never would have opened this account if I knew I couldn’t actually use my money and they would block my whole account if I tried to.

  8. Erik says:

I loaded money on a Green Dot card that I hadn’t realized expired a month earlier. I went straight back in Walmart five minutes later and the person at said to call the number on the back of the card. From that point on it was an absolute nightmare of them locking the account and refusing to release my money and refused to accept my government issued documents!? I called, chatted and emailed over and over and got absolutely NOWHERE! They’re based out of the Phillipines and there’s no local offices to speak face to face. I soon realized their ploy is to frustrate you to the point of giving up and they just keep your money! They’re absolute scumbags and thieves and now I have to sue them.

  9. Dawn Schoeppner says:

Does anyone know what became of this lawsuit? I called the lead counsel and their receptionist told me that they arent taking anymore greendot cases. I need to find someone that will. I called around once before and I had a bunch of attorneys tell me they were at their max greendot cases they could or would take. If I tried to go into what all I have proof that they have done with my account I’d fill this thread. One time for example I had a 10k deposit made and they spent 2 months trying to deny they had possession of my funds. Then when they were backed into a corner they said I had another account it had went to. That made no sense the other other accounts with them I had ever had was closed by them and I was forced into taking a new card. So how is that account holding 10k again? Just 1 example seriously you’d get tired of reading ling before I finished!!!

I used green dot for a while and customer service reps are almost impossible to reach with out a 45 plus min wait then everyone you talk to says different things and considering I was a victim of a scammer who made 49 or so purchases in less than 24 hours all over the country an got away with 800 or so dollars without green dot noticing or raising a red flag. They should be a lot easier to contact just saying. Not to mention when I finally get a hold of them and bring it to there attention Green dot tells me they are closing my account and disabled me access to online an for me to buy a new card to get access to the money when they finish disputing it. I think green dot should be held accountable for the stress an depression I am feeling due to this. I am disabled an depend on that money monthly to survive this ain’t right!
