Woman with cosmetic bandages on chest A young woman who has experienced significant chronic illness argues that her breast implants were to blame.

Many other women have stepped forward to tell their stories of significant implant illness symptoms that caused them to visit their doctor and ultimately discover that it was their implants causing the problems.

Every year, more than 400,000 teenagers and women undergo breast augmentation procedures.

The latest woman to bring legal action, Rebecca W., says that she battled extreme chronic pain and fatigue over the course of the 4 years prior to Oct. 2018. At that point in time, she underwent surgery to have her breast implants removed. Lab results, according to her, indicated that the implants were causing her to get sick.

Even though breast implant illness is not yet recognized as a formal medical condition, women in the United States and around the country have reported problems with BII symptoms.

This woman located in New Zealand said that she had to visit multiple medical professionals before being taken seriously, and has shared her story with the news media and through her lawsuit, in an effort to help other women who might be facing significant problems with their implants.

Rebecca W. received her implants at age 19, but began to experience symptoms associated with those implants shortly after the initial surgery which occurred in Nov. 2014.

She said that she felt like her muscles were constantly tightly stretched and that she developed a post-surgery complication known as double bubble. Double bubble happens when an implant drops where the breast meets the chest behind the fold.

It means that the implant is falling out. Her initial implants were at first removed and then repositioned into the chest wall to address the double bubble problem. However, the patient continued to experience debilitating side effects such as migraines and anxiety attacks, making it difficult for her to go to work or go to school.

She says that some of the symptoms of her breast implant illness included headaches, consistent colds and coughs, lost sensation in her arms, the feeling of pins and needles throughout her body, and stabbing pains spreading throughout her back, neck, chest, and shoulders.

Additionally, she says that her hormones were negatively impacted by the placement of the breast implants. She said she experienced rashes, irregular and painful periods, and acne. She visited with many different medical professionals including endocrinologists, neurologists, osteopaths, naturopaths, and physiotherapists in an effort to address the problems.

Some of the common side effects of BII include sleep disturbance, chest pain, chronic pain, depression, fatigue, photosensitivity, anxiety, hair loss, and brain fog. A Facebook group contains over 50,000 members of women who got breast implants and then later researched to find out the possible cause of their symptoms.

Diagnostic tests used during this process include MRIs, CTs, and blood tests. The issues with the side effects can appear shortly after the surgery or months later and can vary in severity from one patient to another.

Another breast implant illness is called Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma, which women around the world have reported after receiving breast implants.
