Johnsons-baby-powderIllinois plaintiff Lynn  C. has filed a baby powder lawsuit against pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson, alleging that she developed ovarian cancer from its talcum baby and shower powder.

Lynn alleges she used the powder for feminine hygiene purposes, and had been doing so since 1992. However on May 14, 2012, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and she learned that there was a link between the talc based baby powder and ovarian cancer.

According to talc powder class action lawsuit, Johnson & Johnson had allegedly known about the side effects of ovarian cancer development, but had failed to mention it on its labels.

The plaintiff states in her baby powder lawsuit that she never would have used the talcum powder if she had known that it could lead to ovarian cancer. Johnson & Johnson had marketed both products for years to be hygiene products that could be used for a variety of purposes.

But recent studies suggested that these powders could cause potential health hazards due to the talc component. The studies have shown that when applied to the vaginal area, the talc powder components migrate from the vagina to the uterus, and into the fallopian tubes and ovaries, where tumors had reportedly formed.

Lynn has become one of such incidence, leading her to file this baby powder lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson. Furthermore, the Illinois woman states that Johnson & Johnson had the civil responsibility to warn the public and healthcare providers about all potential talc powder side effects, because they are relying on the accuracy of the given information.

Cebulske is suing Johnson & Johnson for being allegedly responsible for manufacturing, selling, distributing, and marketing dangerous products. She is seeking compensatory damages over the amount of $350,000, with charges including: negligence, false advertising, concealing information, and misrepresenting a product.

Overview of Baby Powder Cancer Danger

While talc has been a common ingredient in household products for decades, the concern of ovarian cancer has been prevalent for years. However, this health hazard has come up once again because prevalent studies were published that showed a possible connection between talc and ovarian cancer.

One study was published in June 2013 issue of the medical journal Cancer Prevention Research, which showed that women faced a 20 percent to 30 percent higher risk of developing ovarian cancer after using the Johnson & Johnson’s baby powders.

In the same year, the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance estimated that nearly 14,000 women in the United States lost their lives to ovarian cancer, with many of the victims reportedly being avid talcum powder users.

In fact, according to Dr. Daniel Cramer, a Harvard gynecologist, epidemiologist, professor, and researcher, as many as 10 percent of all ovarian cancer cases in America are caused by talcum powder. Dr. Cramer has testified on the behalf of talcum powder plaintiffs against Johnson & Johnson, stating that the talcum powder did indeed present a health hazard.

In general, baby powder cancer lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
