A plaintiff has filed a pressure cooker burns lawsuit in California federal court against Tristar Products, Inc., and Costco Wholesale Corporation.
According to the lawsuit, the plaintiff, Wendy S., a citizen and resident of California, alleges that in or around January 2017 she purchased a Tristar Power Pressure Cooker XL from Costco. Purportedly, however, while using the pressure cooker, the pressure cooker “malfunctioned and caused severe, permanent and disfiguring burns to plaintiff’s body.”
She has brought forth causes of action against the defendants for her alleged pressure cooker burns including Negligence, Strict Liability, and Breach of Implied Warranty.
According to the plaintiff’s allegations, the pressure cooker that was designed and sold by Tristate and Costco is not “of the same quality” as other pressure cookers that are acceptable to be sold.
She alleges that in the defendant’s “sales literature and communication” of the product, they warranted that the product was safe and fit for use.
Reports About Pressure Cooker Burns
There have been several lawsuits alleging pressure cooker burns like one filed by Wendy. They all claim similar malfunctioning properties of the device. Among these consumer reports include issues pertaining to the device’s defective parts, malfunctioning, and even pressure cooker burns that have resulted in consumers suffering from second and third degree burns.
An ongoing class action investigation pertaining to pressure cooker burns are open to all consumers who feel that they have suffered from malfunctioning of a pressure cooker or even from the device not working as it intended. This malfunctioning may have led to food exploding from the device and burning the owner.
Some of the pressure cooker brands that are currently being investigated include Aldi, Crofton, Cuisinart, Maxi-Matic, Tristar, Wolfgang Puck and others.
Dangers of Pressure Cookers
If a pressure cooker does malfunction and fails to properly work there can be dangerous results. These products are inherently dangerous products that may cause severe damage and injury.
Particularly, a pressure cooker functions by trapping steam inside a sealed chamber. By doing so, the pressure within the sealed chamber increases and may rise to 15 pounds per square inch (psi). Moreover, as the pressure within the chamber increases, the temperature also increases to approximately 250 degrees Fahrenheit. This will then quickly cook the food placed within.
Such increases in pressure and temperature may cause serious injury and damage to a person if a pressure cooker does malfunction.
Like Wendy’s pressure cooker burns lawsuit, several personal injury lawsuits have been filed by plaintiffs alleging severe burns after their pressure cooker lids have blown off, blasting and spewing hot foods onto their skin.
This Pressure Cooker Burns Lawsuit is Case No. 2:17-cv-06406-MWF-MRW in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.
