Were your recently diagnosed with stomach cancer and don’t know what the cause may be? New data shows that Nexium stomach cancer may be a possible cause for many diagnoses.
A stomach cancer diagnosis can be a startling and traumatic experience. Stomach cancer affects the lining of the stomach, including the portion where the esophagus meets the top of the stomach. Symptoms of stomach cancer include fatigue, feeling bloated, stomach pain, and persistent heartburn.
If you were recently diagnosed with stomach cancer, you may be wondering why you developed the condition. Common risk factors for stomach cancer include gastrointestinal reflux disease, obesity, and smoking. However, new data suggests that there may be a correlation between heartburn meds and Nexium stomach cancer.
Heartburn meds such as Nexium and Prilosec may be linked to an increased risk for Nexium stomach cancer. Research has not identified a causation link, but data suggests a strong correlation between the use of heartburn meds and the risk for stomach cancer.
Proton pump inhibitors are heartburn meds that are commonly used to control acid reflux. A new study shows that long term use of the medications may increase your risks for Nexium stomach cancer by almost 250 percent.
The high risk seems to be associated with a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori, an often harmless bug carried by half of the world. In a small percentage of the population, the bacterium has been tied to the development of stomach cancer. Research has shown that people on heartburn meds with an ongoing Helicobacter pylori infection have a higher chance of developing atrophic gastritis, a precursor to stomach cancer.
Researches and industry leaders have acknowledged that the data does not know that heartburn meds cause Nexium stomach cancer, but the results are nonetheless alarming.
“Interestingly, the authors found no such correlation between gastric cancer risk and long-term treatment with other anti-suppressive drugs … suggesting that acid-suppression is not the sole factor,” says researcher Richard Ferrero from the Hudson Institute of Medical Research in Australia, in a press release. Ferrero was not involved with the study but is a prominent gastrointestinal infection researcher. “The work has important clinical implications as PPIs, which are among the top 10 selling generic drugs in the US, are commonly prescribed to treat heartburn.”
More research is certainly warranted, but Nexium stomach cancer may be an answer for patients trying to make sense of their new cancer diagnosis. Drug manufacturers may not have adequately warned patients about the risk for Nexium stomach cancer, and attorneys’ are investigating allegations that the manufacturers should be held accountable for not disclosing all of the risks.
If you or a loved one took heartburn meds and later developed stomach cancer, you may be eligible for a Nexium stomach cancer lawsuit. A Nexium stomach cancer lawsuit could help recover compensation for medical expenses, loss of earnings, pain and suffering, wrongful death, and more.
In general, acid reflux medication lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
