A consumer hit Walmart with a class action lawsuit over its Onn touchscreen tablet computers. The 2019, 2020 and 2021 Onn Surf and Pro tablets are prone to cracking and develop “dead pixels” or cease functioning with normal pressure, according to the Walmart class action lawsuit.

Walmart is aware of the Onn tablet computer issues but fails to fix the issues and also will not repair the device free of charge, according to the Walmart class action lawsuit.

“As a result of Walmart’s unfair, deceptive and fraudulent business practices, owners of the class devices, including Plaintiff, have suffered an ascertainable loss of money, property and/or value,” the lawsuit states. “The egregiously unfair, deceptive and unconscionable trade practices committed by defendant give rise to substantial aggravating factors.”

Walmart’s private label products have a profit margin that is twice as high as the profit on national brands, according to the Walmart class action lawsuit. The claims include violations worth more than $5 million.

The lead plaintiff in the Walmart class action lawsuit, Steven Farmer, says his 8-inch Surf Tablet Pro developed black blotches after four months of normal use and the touchscreen stopped working. He claims he then purchased the same model, and, within days, a crack appeared along the bottom of the touchscreen, which then spiderwebbed across the screen and the touchscreen stopped working.

Walmart would not fix or replace the tablets, the Onn tablets class action alleges.

Walmart violates several state and federal laws, class action claims

The Walmart class action claims the Onn tablet issues and Walmart’s failure to address those issues violates New Mexico’s consumer fraud and false advertising statutes, breach of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, breach of implied and express warranties, fraudulent misrepresentation and unjust enrichment.

Farmer seeks monetary damages and equitable relief for the class.

In related news, a judge recently dismissed a separate Walmart class action lawsuit claiming the company turned a blind eye to more than $200 million in fraudulent money transfers.

This class action is for units sold several years ago. However, Walmart has pulled its 2024 Onn tablets from sale and placed them in lockup. While an associate can pull it out from the cage, it won’t ring up. However, not knowing WTH, I was able to place an online order at another store. When I received a pickup email, the order was inexplicably canceled when I reached the store. I went inside to ask at the electronics counter, he spilled the beans. Get your cheap tablet elsewhere.

I’ve purchased 5 of these ONN tablets and every single one has broken (usually a cracked screen) I purchase the insurance and used them all about 2 times (12 repairs!!!) Then they said that was all the warranty covered. I finally bought the screens to replace myself but the replacements were even worse quality and the LCD broke. I’m down to one last working tablet and not sure how long it’s going to last. Total waste of money. Screens are garbage and break so easily. The only thing about it was it had good functional interface for children. Other than that, complete trash.

I bought an Onn. Tablet for myself in 2021 I contacted BBB and they told me that someone from Walmart would get back to me. I am still waiting, I only had the tablet for a couple of months, and it cracked and there is nothing that anyone can do. When I go to Walmart here in Ontario Canada, I don’t buy anything from Onn.
