Volvo camera recall overview:
- Who: Volvo Car USA LLC is recalling about 413,000 vehicles.
- Why: The rearview camera may fail to display images, increasing crash risk.
- Where: The recall is active in the United States.
Volvo is recalling more than 400,000 vehicles due to a rearview camera malfunction and advising owners to perform an over-the-air software update to fix the problem.
The recall, announced May 1, 2025, affects 413,151 vehicles from a range of Volvo models including the 2021-2025 XC40, 2022 V90, 2022-2025 S90, V90CC, C40, XC60, and 2023-2025 S60, V60, V60CC and XC90 vehicles.Â
The vehicles’ rearview camera fails to display images when in reverse, in violation of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 111 regarding rear visibility.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), this defect significantly reduces the driver’s ability to see behind the vehicle, thereby increasing the likelihood of a crash.
“A rearview camera image that does not display reduces the driver’s view of what is behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash,” the Volvo camera recall says.
Volvo recall: Drivers can perform an over-the-air update
The recall affects all pre-2026 Volvo models equipped with Google built-in software, which Volvoa says is responsible for the camera malfunction.
This issue is not isolated to Volvo alone; the Polestar 2, an electric vehicle from a brand partially owned by Volvo, is experiencing a similar problem due to a synchronization error between the camera and the video display.
The Volvo recall notice emphasizes that the remedy involves a straightforward software update, which can be performed by dealers or through an over-the-air update at no cost to the vehicle owners.
The company has assured that owner notification letters will be mailed by June 24, 2025, to inform them about the necessary steps to resolve the issue.

Volvo is currently facing a class action over a previous recall and allegations that it knowingly sold certain plug-in hybrid vehicles with a defect in the high-voltage battery that makes the cars prone to catching fire.
