Volkswagen recall overview:
- Who: Volkswagen Group of America Inc. is recalling over 356,000 Audi vehicles.
- Why: A software error may prevent the rearview camera image from displaying correctly.
- Where: The Volkswagen recall is active in the United States.
Volkswagen Group of America Inc., the parent company of Audi, is recalling more than 356,000 vehicles due to a software glitch that could impair the rearview camera’s functionality.
The Volkswagen recall, issued Dec. 19, 2025, affects a wide range of Audi models produced between 2019 and 2026. The software error impacts Audi models such as the 2019-2025 A6, 2020-2026 Q7, and 2022-2026 E-Tron GT, among others.
The software glitch in these vehicles can lead to the rearview camera image failing to display, which poses a significant risk by reducing the driver’s visibility and increasing the likelihood of a crash.
“A rearview image that does not display reduces the driver’s view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash,” the recall notice says.
Audi recall: Dealers to update software free of charge
Volkswagen says dealers will update the affected vehicles’ software at no cost to the owners.
This proactive measure aims to restore the rearview camera’s functionality and ensure compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, which mandates rear visibility.
Volkswagen has committed to notifying vehicle owners by mail, with letters expected to be sent out by Feb. 17, 2026.
In the meantime, Audi owners can reach out to customer service at 1-800-253-2834 for further assistance. Additionally, the NHTSA’s website allows owners to check their vehicle identification numbers to see if their vehicle is part of the Volkswagen recall.
Volkswagen says it has not received any reports of injuries related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
Volkswagen and Audi recently agreed to a class action settlement to resolve allegations the companies concealed a turbocharger defect in generation 1, 2 or 3 EA888 engines, including models like the Audi A4, Volkswagen Golf and Volkswagen Tiguan.
