- Where: The VW recall affects certain VW Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport vehicle owners nationwide.
Volkswagen Group of America issued a recall for more than 270,000 of its VW Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport vehicles over concerns they may have been equipped with defect front passenger airbags.
The recall involves certain model year 2021-2024 VW Atlas vehicles and model year 2020-2024 Atlas Cross Sport Vehicles.
Volkswagen said it is concerned the passenger occupant detection system (PODS) in the VW vehicles could experience a fault in their wiring, causing the front passenger air bag to become deactivated while the seat is occupied.
“A deactivated passenger air bag increases the risk of injury during a crash,” VW said, per a recall acknowledgment letter published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
VW recall: Dealers to replace PODS sensor mat and wiring harness in recalled vehicles
Volkswagen plans to remedy the recall issue by having its dealers replace the PODS sensor mat and wiring harness in the recalled vehicles, at no cost to vehicle owners, according to the recall acknowledgment letter.
Recall notification letters are expected to be sent by mail to affected vehicle owners on Aug. 16, 2024. Anyone who has additional questions about the recall can contact Volkswagen by telephone at 1-800-893-5298.
Volkswagen issued a separate recall last month for nearly 80,000 of its model year 2021-2023 Volkswagen ID.4 vehicles over concerns their rearview camera image displays could be delayed or fail to display an image.
