VW recall overview:
- Who: Volkswagen is recalling several models of its vehicles.
- Why: The driver’s side frontal air bag inflator may explode.
- Where: The VW recall is active in the United States.
Volkswagen is recalling more than 110,000 of its vehicles, including certain Beetles, due to the risk that they contain an exploding air bag inflator.
The recall was published to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website on Oct. 30. It applies to a total of 114,478 Volkswagen vehicles, including the 2017-2019 Beetle, Beetle Convertible, 2012-2014 Passat, 2017 Passat Wagon and 2006-2007 Passat Sedan vehicles.
According to the recall, the driver’s side Takata SDI-D frontal air bag inflator in the vehicles may explode. The automaker says this is due to the degradation of propellant in the inflator after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.
“An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death,” the recall says.
VW to replace Takata inflators free-of-charge
Hundreds of drivers and passengers have suffered from Takata airbag injuries due to a defect in certain models that made them explode unexpectedly. The faulty airbags have also caused dozens of fatalities in the United States.
In August, Ford Motor Co. and Mazda Motor of America issued urgent “do not drive” warnings for more than 457,000 vehicles that contain deadly Takata air bags.
According to the VW recall, dealers will replace the driver’s side front air bag module, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed Dec. 27, VW said.
Last month, a group of Volkswagen owners from California, New York and Illinois filed a class action lawsuit against the automaker alleging the company sold 2021-2024 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport vehicles with defective braking systems.

7 thoughts onVW announces recall for several models due to potential airbag defect
I was in a crash 2 months ago where the airbags did not deploy and based on this recall if they did… I may not have survived. Volkswagen has ultimately failed their customers by being unable to provide repairs, replacements, or any type of solution to keep us safe. How can you send out a recall for exploding airbags and not have placements?! Most recent recall letter was sent in June 2025, a pathetic apology for not having replacements for the recall and they would follow up in September 2025 with more informaton?!?! Too many lives are already on the line they should be ashamed of themselves. They also failed to mention the severity of the issue in recall letters, I was sick to my stomach when I researched it for myself. Please add me.
I’d like to know how we are supposed to get the airbag replaced when every VW dealer I called in Georgia local to me does NOT have the parts. They all said the parts for my 2013 VW Passat have been on backorder for quite I while. I went as far as to call VW Customer Care and have a 30 minute conversation with them, only for them tell me that the plant in TN doesn’t have an ETA for replacement parts. So do we just drive the car and hope the airbag doesn’t explode and injure or kill us while we are put on a waiting list?
I have a 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan and the brakes seem as if they don’t want to stop off and on.
I have a 2018VW Passat – Please add me.
