VW ID.4 recall overview:

  • Who: VW has recalled more than 98,000 of its Volkswagen ID.4 vehicles.
  • Why: The vehicles’ door handles may allow water into the door, causing the door to malfunction and open.
  • Where: The VW ID.4 recall is active in the United States.

Volkswagen has recalled more than 98,000 vehicles due to a defect that can cause the doors to malfunction and potentially open while in motion.

The recall was posted Sept. 4 to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on. It applies to 98,806 model year 2021-2024 Volkswagen ID.4 vehicles.

According to the VW recall, the affected vehicles may have been built with door handles that do not meet the factory specifications for protection against water entry.

Water entering the printed circuit board can lead to communication issues between the door handle and the door control unit causing an “open command” to the door handle when the handle is not being activated by a person.

“An open door on a moving vehicle puts occupants at risk of injury, and can cause damage to objects and people who may be outside of the vehicle,” the recall says.

VW offers free repair

If the vehicle has the issue, occupants may notice an audible clicking noise, similar to the sound of a vehicle door being locked and unlocked, the recall states.

Volkswagen said it is not aware of any crashes or injuries as a result of the issue. However, it is aware of 135 warranty claims dating from June 2023 through May 2024.

Volkswagen dealers will inspect each door handle and replace them with improved parts if necessary at no charge to the drivers. A vehicle software update will also be performed to update the door handle parameters, the company said.

Owners will be notified on or before Nov. 1.

In May, Volkswagen Group of America issued a separate recall for nearly 80,000 of its model year 2021-2023 Volkswagen ID.4 vehicles over concerns their rearview camera displays could fail to display an image or be delayed.
