viagraUncertainty surrounding Viagra melanoma skin cancer continues to build as conversation around a Viagra melanoma study has no end in sight. The study, published in June in JAMA Internal Medicine, has the been a topic of great interest to medical experts and Viagra users alike. Several Viagra melanoma lawsuits have been filed as a result of the findings suggested by the Viagra melanoma study.

The “little blue pill” has been used by men to treat erectile dysfunction since 1998. For many years, it has been used widely across the country, potentially putting thousands if not millions of men at risk for Viagra melanoma.

Viagra Melanoma Study

In June, Dr. Abrar Qureshi co-authored a study concerning Viagra melanoma. The study suggested that men who used Viagra were 84 percent more likely to develop melanoma than those who did not take the drug. It has been suggested that other erectile dysfunction drugs, such as Cialis and Levitra, may have similar or increased melanoma risks.

The viagra melanoma study examined nearly 26,000 men over 10 years. Between 2000 and 2010, 3,500 Viagra skin cancer cases were found. Most of the cases were squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma, the two most common forms of skin cancer. However, a small percentage of cases were melanoma.

Researchers believe that Viagra did not cause an increase risk of basal cell or squamous cell carcinoma.

Viagra Study Controversy

The problem with the Viagra melanoma study is that it did not prove definitively that Viagra increased melanoma risks for men. Instead, experts believe the matter requires additional research.

Although not definitive, many men have cited this study in Viagra melanoma lawsuits. The number of Viagra lawsuits is expected to continue growing as the conversation around melanoma risks continues.

Pfizer, the drug’s manufacturer, claims that Viagra melanoma patients had a health history or other health problems that led to their diagnosis, not Viagra. They do not intend on making any label changes concerning Viagra melanoma risks.

Some view the claims against Viagra as drastic, but medical experts from universities such as Harvard and Brown agree that additional research should be conducted on the matter. Though nothing is proved definitely yet, this does not mean there is no Viagra melanoma connection.

Dr. June Robinson, who was not a part of the Viagra study, told NBC that she observed that the rate of melanoma diagnosis had actually slowed since the introduction of Viagra. She also thought that Qureshi’s findings were strong enough to warrant future study.

Melanoma Skin Cancer

Though melanoma is the rarest form of skin cancer, accounting for less than 2 percent of skin cancer cases, it is the most deadly.

Melanomas, which are skin tumors, often resemble black or brown moles. It is expected that nearly 10,000 people will die from melanoma this year with another 76,000 new cases being diagnosed.

In spite of the controversy surrounding the Viagra melanoma study, men are continuing to file Viagra lawsuits against the manufacturers of Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra for alleged melanoma development. A Viagra class action lawsuit investigation is currently underway.
