Verizon logoVerizon “dupes” customers into purchasing extended warranties on new mobile phones, even though they don’t receive any additional protection than they already have with the manufacturer’s warranty, a class action lawsuit claims.

According to the class action lawsuit, Verizon charges customers $1.99 per month for the extended warranty, but “Verizon’s extended warranty program is anything but ‘extended.”

“To the average reasonable consumer…an extended warranty implies that it provides coverage during a period in which the original manufacturer’s warranty does not, or provides additional benefits that the original manufacturer’s warranty does not,” says the lawsuit. Consumers are unaware that they don’t need to purchase the extended warranty because it runs concurrently with the original manufacturer’s warranty for the first year.

The class action lawsuit is seeking a full refund to all Verizon customers who paid for the useless extended warranty. It’s also seeking an injunction barring Verizon from continuing its extended warranty “scheme.”
