- Where: The recall is effective in the United States.
AToyota is recalling more than 550,000 Toyota Highlander SUVs due to a defect that may prevent the second-row seat backs from locking properly. This issue could lead to increased injury risks in the event of a high-speed crash.
The recall, announced on March 5, affects 550,007 2021–2024 models of Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid.
The problem lies in the recliner technology of the second-row seats, where assembly teeth may not fully engage, preventing the seat backs from locking securely.
Toyota discovered the issue during an inspection in October 2023 and noted a subsequent design change by the supplier in July 2024, which led to further investigations.
Toyota Highlander recall addresses seat back safety concerns
Toyota has taken proactive steps by issuing a voluntary safety recall in February 2026 despite being unable to estimate the exact number of vehicles affected by the defect.
To address the issue, Toyota will replace the return springs in the seat back recliner assemblies at no cost to the vehicle owners.
The company plans to notify affected customers by mail starting April 20, 2026, advising them to visit a dealer for the necessary repairs. For more information, consumers can contact Toyota’s customer service at 1-800-331-4331.
Toyota says it has not received any reports of injury related to the Toyota recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
In another recent Toyota recall, about 162,000 Toyota Tundra and Tundra Hybrid pickup trucks from the 2024 and 2025 model years are affected by a multimedia display defect that could lead to safety risks.
