Toyota has initiated a Lexus recall for more than 144,000 Lexus vehicles in the United States due to a defect in the rearview camera system. This defect may prevent the camera image from displaying when the vehicle is in reverse, thereby increasing the risk of a collision.
The recall, announced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), affects certain non-hybrid Lexus models, specifically the 2022–2025 NX250 and NX350, 2023–2026 RX350 and 2024–2026 TX350 vehicles. The issue stems from a brief drop in electrical power during specific engine restart conditions, which can interrupt the camera system before it fully loads.
According to the NHTSA, this problem may occur when a vehicle is restarted shortly after being turned off, although it does not happen in all cases.
“Regulators estimate all affected vehicles contain the underlying condition, though the issue may only appear under specific operating scenarios,” the Lexus recall states.
Toyota began investigating reports of inoperative rearview cameras in early 2025 and concluded in March 2026, after months of testing, that a recall was necessary.
Dealers to update the camera software or replace the camera
The NHTSA emphasizes that a rearview image that does not display effectively diminishes the driver’s view behind the vehicle, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.
Toyota has responded by offering a remedy for the affected vehicles. Dealers will update the rearview camera software or replace the camera as necessary, without any charge to the vehicle owners.
The company has assured that owner notification letters will be mailed by May 3. Owners may contact Toyota’s customer service at 1-800-331-4331 for more information, the recall notice advises.
Toyota states it has not received any reports of injuries related to the Lexus recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
Last year, Toyota, Lexus and Subaru recalled over a million vehicles due to a software glitch that affects the rearview camera system.
